what I do
I am an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of Geriatrics at the University of Chicago, moving from Harvard Medical School in 2003. I have been actively engaged in teaching, management, and research regarding urinary incontinence in older persons for nearly 20 years. My research focuses on quality of life impact, patient-centered outcomes and long-term care. I have published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on urinary incontinence in such publications as the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Journal of Urology, American Geriatric Society (AGS) Geriatric Review Syllabus, Cassell et al's Geriatric Medicine, Oxford Textbook of Geriatric Medicine, the on-line textbook UpToDate, Cardozo and Staskin’s Textbook of Female Urology and Urogynecology, and Chapple et al’s Multidisciplinary Management of Female Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. I am the Chair of the Frail Elderly Committee for the 4th International Consultation on Incontinence. On the national policy level, I have helped devise the urinary incontinence quality of care measures for the National Committee for Quality Assurance Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Physicians Quality Reporting Initiative, and served on the planning committee for the December 2007 NIH State of the Science Conference on Prevention of Incontinence. I am a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association for Continence and in 2004 was awarded the 2nd AGS/NAFC Continence Care Champion Award. I am a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and Neurourology and Urodynamics. I am a dedicated teacher and lecture nationally and internationally on incontinence. Currently, I direct the Geriatric Continence Clinic and co-direct the Geriatric Urology Training Program at the University of Chicago, and also practice geriatric primary care and long term care. |
