A teaspoon of honey before bed seems to calm children's coughs and help them sleep better, according to a new study that relied on parents' reports of their children's symptoms.

The folk remedy did better than cough medicine or no treatment in a three-way comparison. Honey may work by coating and soothing an irritated throat, the study authors said.

This is good to know. Thx, Cindi. I don't have any little ones but w/the governments recent reports on the safety concerns of OTC cold preparations, I have been wondering what's a parent to do? jan

I hear you, Jan.  I wish we had this info when our kids were small.  And, the next time I have a cough, I may try honey before resorting to an OTC product.

Wow, that's nice to know. I don't have kids yet but I swear, when my husband gets sick it hold on for a LONG time. We could possibly have the same cold right now and I got over mine a week ago and he's still coughing up a storm. I'll try it tonight, I need more sleep ;)

THANKS!
