How many of you out there take Avandia? An article in our paper this morning talked about it causeing Heart attack possibly. I would take it easy with this one. I am not sure I trust any of them now. I will continue with the way I am going I think. What else do the meds do except to lower blood sugar mostly. To many risk sounds like to me.

Yes, they have found a problem with Avandia.  But there are other meds out there.  Some have been around for a long time and if anything was going to be wrong with them they would most likely have found it by now.  The problem is that since diabetes is a progressive disease that for many, if not most, there comes a point when diet and excercise are not enough.  Natural supplements are not regulated or tested and since they are not regulated may not even have in them what they claim!  And often the amount will in fact vary from bottle to bottle.

I chose not to use meds when my dr wanted me to at the beginning.  The nurse said diet and excercise to try first was fine.  That is what I did and it worked.  My morning numbers are up but my excercise is way... down.  I need to get back on that.......  <sigh>  I am realistic.  There may come a time when I will need meds.  But I will do my best till then to stay healthy and have my numbers good!

Now, if they would just find a CURE!!!

I am with you there Cheryl!!

A cure would be the best thing!!

It is also true that many new meds end up with more side effects and problems showing up after they have been around a while.

I think one question with the problems with avandia and I think they have now mentioned is it actos too? BUT diabetics are more prone to heart problems so is the avandia the cause or diabetes the cause? The same questions come up i think with the arthritis meds. It is important though to find out all you can on side effects and i have found the greatest source on that sometimes is the pharmacist!! They have the really big books with lot more details!!

That said, as a reminder, even the herbal and natural remedies can have side effects. Simply because they are natural does not equate with safe!! But there are a lot of sources to check some of those. A number of the reference books also do have some warnings on if there are any potential medication interactions with herbal remedies. Actually there often the pharamcist can also check those out too.

Bottom line is with this disease it is very important to be in charge yourself!! Ask questions and if the medical people seem to be unsure or saying something that does not sound right, ask more questions!!
