I took Effexor for 2 years and I had a love hate relationship with the medication.  I loved the medication b/c it really did work..........I'd go as for to say it changed my life.  I hate the Effexor b/c the side effects were so bad.  While on the medicine I had vivid dreams, night sweats, dizziness, brain zaps, and absolutely no sex drive.  The worst of the side effects came in withdrawal when I stopped taking the medicine to become pregnant.  The half life (time the medicine takes to build up in your system) is very short.  Because of this you may suffer withdrawal/side effects from missing your dose even by hours.  The magic tip for me to stop the withdrawal from the Effexor was to take 10mg of Prozac for 2-4 months after finishing the Effexor.  The Prozac counter effects the Effexor withdrawal, so essentially you don't have to suffer any withdrawal when stopping Effexor as long as you follow it directly with the Prozac for a few months.  Prozac has very little to no withdrawal.

I learned to deal with the side effects while on the medication, but I was in no way prepared for the hell of the withdrawal I suffered when I stopped taking the Effexor.

I've been contemplating taking something again for months now, but I'm so scared of the side-effects.  I'm thinking if I do get on something again I'd like to try the Lexapro..............my doctor said it's side-effects aren't as common.

Good luck and hang in there.  The side effects may lessen or go away all together.  With Antidepressants you have to give them a good 3-6 months to allow them to work and also see how well you can tolerate any side effects.

Hi Collen, thanks for your reply. I am thinking about Lexapro too. I did some research on the web last night, and liked what I found about Lexapro, Prozac, and Zoloft. So those are my top 3 choices. I did take Lexapro before, so I know what to expect. Of course I didn't take it very long. Yes, I have noticed the lower sex drive, but my drive is low anyway, so there's not much change. Except now I don't worry about it as much anymore.

Yavonne!  Am I reading your siggie right -- DJ is 1??!!  Where has the time gone??!!  I had the hot flashes, night sweats, no sex drive, all of it with the Lexapro.  It did go away for me - but it took about 4-5 months.  Vivid dreams, too.  I'm glad I stuck with it.  Can you believe I'm working 60-75 hours a week as a nurse now??  I KNOW you remember how bad off I was just 3 years ago.  Hang in there, it gets better.  Or switch meds if you can't handle it.  Sometimes you need to try a few to find the *right* one.  Zoloft gave me horrible pa!

Hi Colleen & welcome to our community!  I love the Lexapro, just wanted to let you know that it changed my life!  It's a good med.  The side effects were there but have since all gone away.

Hugs,

Yes, DJ is one. He's 14 months, and just barely getting his first tooth. I go back to the doctor tomorrow. I don't feel so great today, but AF is here. I'm sure that has to do with it. I'm glad work is going good for you. But aren't you so tired?
