My husband and I watched.  He lifts weights.  It never even occurred to us while watching that Bill and Jim took steroids.

They are both very lean in comparison to most of the other men.  They weighed in around 170 lbs.  They lost all of their excess weight, and had no sagging skin.  There may have been similiar muscle mass (and probably was) on the bigger guys, but there was still some fat on their arms, too.

Muscles "stick out", show, when a person is lean, and those guys were.  As others said, they lost that weight at a safe and normal rate of about 3 lbs per week.  And yes, steroids will add a lot of weight if you take them!  Men can add 20-30 lbs to their weight in a fairly short time on steroids.

Julie didn't look too skinny, she looked just right.  She is very much well within her healthy weight on the BMI chart.

Regarding "cheating" - how can you cheat, if there are no rules?  On the Biggest Loser there is only weighing in, and beating the scale.

And, I would imagine they would not want to take steroids and risk gaining 20-30 lbs.; that doesn't make any sense at all.  Also, I have a friend who is into weight lifting, as well as her husband, and she told me that you can tell the guys who take steroids because they have a puffy look to their muscles, even though they are not overweight at all, vs. having defined muscles.  I'm assuming this is because steroids cause water bloat along with muscle gain, hence, puffy, big muscles.  Neither of the twins looked that way at all.  They looked trim and healthy throughout their whole body, including their faces.

I'm not saying they appeared to have cheated because of the amount of weight they lost....it was more the muscle mass they gained.  Jim had veins popping out of his arms.  None of the other men, who lost lots of weight too, and worked out really hard, had gained that much muscle in a few months.....I mean he looked ripped.  It's just that being around people in gyms, I've never seen it....I love the show though, and it is still very motivating.

Hi cinapia.  This is a direct quote from Bill " As someone who had spent much time on fad diets AND much time in the gym, I realize now that I really didn't know very much at all. "

Obviously Bill was already working out in a gym before he got on the show (I don't know how recently), and although he feels he didn't know the right way to go about exercising, he most likely had a lot of muscle already built up that was hidden by the extra weight he was carrying.  Perhaps Jim went to the gym before the show as well.  I wouldn't be surprised.  I'm thinking if you feel they had more muscle than what you expected, or than what some of the other contestants had, it may be because they started out with more.  I don't for one second doubt that both Bill and Jim deserved their wins.  Even when Jim came back when they surprised the contestants during their makeovers, Jim was very close in weight loss to Bill, I believe it was two or four pounds difference.  And he had already been home for a while, which couldn't have been easy.  I'd like to say congratulations to both of them.  But also congratulations to all of the contestants, because what they go through for the show is grueling, and I, for one, could never do it.

Janet

I agree, I don't think I could handle that grueling routine!  Kudos to all the contestants!
