What's the best holiday cookie?

Is it the sugar cookie?  Decorated or not?

Or something else?

I send cookies to DH's work every year and I'm all out of ideas.  What should I bake this year?  Is there anything new out there?

TIA!

hello!! my mother in law and grandma used to bake SOOOO many cookies every year at the holidays...we do, but not like they used to. anyway, my grandmas favorite was the snickerdoodle. heres 2 recipes(gma used to make it the traditional way):

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/mrs-siggs-snickerdoodles/detail.aspx

my mil's favorite was the peanut butter bonbons. theres a lot of different ways to make em, but we make them the easy no-bake way.
1 1/2 cups crushed graham crackers
1 box (1lb) powdered sugar
1 cup peanut butter
2 sticks of butter
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

blend everything together. roll into balls. place on cookie sheet. we melt vanilla frosting with food coloring and then pour over top the balls. you can melt chocolate chips and pour on top. then we store them in the fridge. hth!!

I like to take a recipe and fix it in several different ways. For example, I'll make shortbread two or three different Christmas shapes, then use some of the same dough but add lots of walnuts and roll in powdered sugar after baking (these are called "russian tea cakes) and for another batch I'll make ovals that I will dip in melted chocolate when they are cool.

Another time I've made variants of my hermits dough-- one the regular hermit another the chocolate chip version and the last one a fruitcake version. (Adjust the spices and so forth, of course, but the dough stays the same.)

Lastly, with sugar cookies, I will sometimes sprinkle crushed up peppermint on some, cinnamon sugar on others, and colored sugar on the others.

For what it's worth, no matter what I make, the chocolate chip cookies always go fastest.

The sugar cookie is a great symbol of the holiday.  I love all cookies, well all sweets really so its hard to pick a favorite, but I dont think you can go wrong with this simple, beautiful cookie.   LOL

sometimes I think people make all these complicated cookies but when they think back to memories of christmas, its the shortbread or the sugar cookie that is most often the "christmas cookie."   They appeal to everyone, as so many people avoid nuts or chocolate anymore.  Its hard to please a whole office full of people on special diets and likes/dislikes.    If you want to jazz it up, try decorating them in a unique way or with extra care if you want to make a stunning presentation. as in, they are too pretty to eat!   If you want them to just gobble them up, do a simple decoration.

I love sugar and snickerdoodle cookies. a christmas tradition growing up was mexican wedding cookies (also called various origin tea cakes) and pizzelle cookies which I love to make. I haven't made them in years, but I know Ruby will love them....and maybe I'll experiment again with flavors and subbed ingredients to help bring the calories down (they're basically eggs, flour and sugar....NOT a healthy treat but so addictive!)
