I'm familiar with this community.  It is a dying fishing town, and there are not a lot of opportunities for kids there.  Even if you want a crappy job, you don't have a lot of options, because there is a lot of competition from unemployed adults.  Eight girls, 16 and under, participated in the pact.  The rest are really just coincidences.  The girls did it because it is the one thing they can control in their lives.  You have a baby, you get an apartment and checks and foodstamps, etc.  So, it probably looked like a good deal to them.  Interestingly, most of the "fathers" are over 18, and one is 24.  It seems that they are not in relationships with the girls.  There haven't been any charges filed yet, but it is all the buzz.

It's pretty sad that this is all the girls ever saw for themselves, but it is pretty common in poor communities.  Of course it is galling to me, given that my profession is to help urban poor kids, and my lot in life seems never to have one of my own.  But it is still understandable.

I understand the mentality but on that scale is crazy.  I taught hs and ms for 8 years...and currently teach at a junior college.  It is sad that they only see the "here and now" rather than the "what could be".

Someone was telling me they got the idea after watching Juno...if that's so, let's hope it's not a trend~

While I think this is COMPLETELY insane (children having children intentionally..what are they thinking..or I guess they weren't and that's the problem), I can also understand. I live in a similar type of area...very small water based area in rapid economic decline and I'm quite certain our teen PG rate has been on the rise for quite some time. Mind you, in our area we have NOTHING for kids & teens to do except run around on the beach and when they do that they are typically getting drunk. Anyway, it seems to be a really common theme among teenage girls that I can get PG and the government will take care of me. I happen to personally know 4 teenage girls with this mentality and they all have 2-4 kids by now and the oldest is now 21 and the youngest is 17 with 3 kids. Really, it's a sad sad thing when our society is more concerned with political correctness then ensuring our teen girls know the complexity and live long responsibility of having a baby. As the daughter of a teen mom (she was 16 when she got PG) I can attest to the fact that it effects you forever. I still have issues with my mom and I'm 25 y/o and they are issues that relate to her youth...I'm sure none of these girls thought about that before spreading their legs. I think what bites my butt the most about this is something we've all complained about at one time or another, I'm sure and that's how come some teenage girl can just run out and get PG..in this case lots of them...and those of us with steady income, tons of support, extreme desire for a child and that are actively trying to have a baby can't get PG. It just seems very unfair!
