Really good book!  I haven't been reading much and then I started and finished this book in two night shifts at work.  I didn't realize this author is Canadian until I started this book.  That makes it even better for me, especially when she was talking about areas of Toronto that I know of.  I liked the characters, but Elena (the main character) drove me nuts with her indecisiveness.  I've never had to make such a werewolf decision (stay or go?) but I know what I would have chosen, lol.

I had to laugh when she was fighting to get through a crowd but saying "excuse me" and "sorry."  What a Canadian thing!  We say "sorry" all the time, even if we don't mean it.  That's the Canadian way!

I really look forward to getting the second book (and then the rest in the series- so many!).  I just have to hold back a little and read at least a couple of my stack of 40 before I buy any more.  We'll see how long that lasts...

Description:

Living in Toronto for a year, Elena is leading the normal life she has always dreamed of, including a stable job as a journalist and a nice apartment shared with her boyfriend. As the lone female werewolf in existence, only her secret midnight prowls and her occasional inhuman cravings set her apart. Just one year ago, life was very different. Adopted by the Pack when bitten, Elena had spent years struggling with her resentment at having her life stolen away. Torn between two worlds, and overwhelmed by the new passions coursing through her body, her only option for control was to deny her awakening needs and escape.

But now the Pack has called Elena home to help them fight an alliance of renegade werewolves who are bent on exposing and annihilating the Pack. And although Elena is obliged to rejoin her "family," she vows not to be swept up in Pack life again, no matter how natural it might feel. She has made her choice. Trouble is, she's increasingly uncertain if it's the right one.

An erotically charged thriller, Bitten will awaken the voracious appetite of every reader, as the age-old battle between man and beast, between human and inhuman forces, comes to a head in one small town and within one woman's body.

Hi Jenn!

This sounds good, but I don't think I'm going to touch it for a while.

DD talked me into the Twighlight series. That's enough vampires and werewolves for me right now. I'm on the 3rd book (Eclipse).

I know what you mean by being familiar with the setting. Washington's Olympic Penninsula is one of my favorite spots in this country. I know the feel of the mountains, forest and beaches. I've been to Seattle, La Push, Forks. I know the feel of the mists and rains. When I read these books, I can put myself right in the midst of the story. I really think that is part of the enchantment of them for me. The genre is completely out of character for me.

I'm glad you enjoyed the book. Thanks for the review. Maybe some day I'll be up to more werewolf literature. LOL!!

Hi Jenn & Bev,

One of things about urban fantasy that I like best is how it elevates the setting to a character, almost. The way the writers world- build, Forks can't be replaced with Bon Temps, Tri- Cities area of Washington, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary.

It's been a long time since I read Bitten, but I do love it and the rest of the series. Only the first two books are about Elena the werewolf.  That's something I like about this series in particular: if you're not getting into a main character, one or two books from now it's onto another main character.  And the YA series that exists alongside the Women of the Otherworld with The Summoning and  The Awakening, it's in the same universe, but with different (younger) characters. I remember not totally loving the vampire character; she's too un-human and has been for too long.

Hi Julia,

I recently bought the next two books in the Otherworld series.  I look forward to reading them eventually!  Maybe sooner but I want to get through some of my historical fiction books first.  I think it's neat that the series isn't narrated by the same character for all the books.  Elena was growing on me by the end of the book but I didn't like how she was so indecisive!  I really enjoyed reading the first two Darkest Power YA books, and the third one comes out next year some time.  That's how I first became awake of this author!  And it's cooler (I think) that's she's Canadian!  :o)
