Windfall by James Magnuson
I liked this almost all the way through. But the end left me dissatisfied, I'm not sure why, it just seemed to plop at the end or maybe I lost interest. lol.
This plot is very similar to A Simple Plan which I also liked.

Ben Lindberg is a financially challenged English professor at the University of Texas with a wife and two kids. While searching for the lost family cat in an abandoned warehouse, he stumbles over a $7.5 million-dollar cache of drug money. A brief struggle with his conscience barely delays his decision to take the money. He knows someone will eventually want the cash back, but Ben is determined to improve his family's lifestyle, yet do so without looking as though he won the lottery. Ben also can't tell Katy, his wife, who would insist on doing the right thing. Eventually, the bad guys do show up, and Ben, without allies, is in danger of losing his family. This is a novel of great suspense by the director of the Texas Center for Writers. Readers will empathize with Ben's dilemma even as he brings his family to the precipice of violent death.
