At first, I could not bear to put this book down.  Even though I suspected from the beginning

REMINDER ABOUT SPOILERS!!!

that the twins' aunt was really their mother, I was intrigued by the whole set up.  And the haunting of the apartment was really good, too.  But then I got so frustrated, not by the various twists near the end, but with the lack of character development.  Everything was so carefully set up at the beginning and then the second half came across as so rushed.

***************SPOILER ALERT********************************

I don't think I consciously knew the mother thing--although I always thought the whole business with the "aunt" was fishy. And I was very disappointed by the resolution to that whole "secret." Big deal. In fact, I didn't see how that could sustain 20 years of not communicating. It was too contrived.

I agree the characters were undeveloped. I didn't connect with anyone, but I was moving along quite nicely until the part with the cat. Then I started feeling uneasy and the part that followed ruined the whole book for me. I so wanted to like it, but I just thought it was too weird for my taste.

Disappointing!

I agree 100 %!  At first. the book seemed perfect to me...gothic, creepy and mysterious.  But then it fell flat.  By the time Martin left the apartment I got the feeling someone had over-edited the book!  I was disappointed in the ending too.

I did like the story line about Martin and his OCD. He seemed the most human of all the characters. It really gave me some insight to the disease.
