I'm putting this post in the Quibbler section because this story hasn't been confirmed by JK Rowling or her spokesperson, so for now it is a rumor, which was started by a good source!

Here's the story from TLC (Mugglenet also has it on their site):

Author Ian Rankin has given a new interview on BBC radio with Simon Mayo (download here) where he mentions his friend and neighbor in Scotland, J.K. Rowling. In the middle of this interview, Mr. Rankin notes that while he has not seen the Harry Potter author in some time, he said she "was working on her Harry Potter encyclopedia" and "drawing family trees for all the characters, going back generations." This of course is not a surprise as Jo has said many times in the past that she is working again on various projects, as highlighted last year when she confirmed she was writing again in cafes, and has often expressed her desire to create the definitive encyclopedia of the beloved Harry Potter world.

Please note, as exciting as this is, we stress that it is important to release Mr. Rankin did not say or imply the Scottish book was to be released any time soon, again just noting he had seen her working on the book aka "The Scottish Book" as she first referred to the name during the interview with PotterCast in December, 2007.

:Keeps fingers doubly crossed:  Perhaps we will see that Harry Potter Encyclopedia sometime in the next year or so.  We can always hope!!

Woot!  So, if and when it comes out, do you think there will be release parties?  I think there will be a midnight release and stores will stay open, but do you think it will be the big to-dos like with DH,etc.?

I can't imagine there will be, but...

That's very exciting!  Like Jillian, I'm curious to see what they will do when it's released.

Don't forget nothing is confirmed yet, but we can hope!

Personally, I think the stores would be stupid NOT to have release parties if and when the "Scottish Book" is released.  I mean let's face it, Harry Potter was and is a great money maker for bookstores, what better way to beef up profits than to have one last big release party night!

I would be willing to bet though it will be on a lesser scale than the books themselves.  Fewer stores will have the parties, it might be kept down to just the major retailers that can really afford the overhead it will cost to run a release party: B&N, Books A Million, Borders, etc.

Just my thoughts.

I wonder if this means she's finished with the adult (as in geared towards adults, not porn ;) LOL  ) book she was supposed to be writing.  Thought I read some place that it was a mystery.

I keep hoping that she's not as finished with HP as she says she is and that maybe someday she'll write another book set in the Harry Potter world-not about the trio, per se, but perhaps the next generation.  In some ways it would be a crazy thing to attempt-how could she ever top Harry Potter?  And yet, I seem to recall one interview in particular where she sounds rather fiesty and possessive of her characters, "These are my characters, after all..." which made me think there might be hope for another HP book.  Unless she was referring to the encyclopedia when she said that.  Sorry, just rambling...

I would be willing to bet though it will be on a lesser scale than the books themselves.  Fewer stores will have the parties, it might be kept down to just the major retailers that can really afford the overhead it will cost to run a release party: B&N, Books A Million, Borders, etc.    I'm trying to remember-what, if anything, was anything done when Tales of Beedle the Bard came out?
