Hi all,

I'm just 10 months into sobriety. I've heard several people share in meetings about drinking dreams but I didn't have my first one until last Thursday night. OMG, it was so real! I only had a sip but I could "taste" the red wine on my tongue for about a day and a half. But what gives?! I had another dream last night. This time I drank a bottle of scotch! Again, it was sooooo real.

No doubt, I'm struggling with the program. I have a conscious desire to drink but I'm clearly not in a good space. Could the frequency or intensity of these sorts of dreams mean anything? (Maybe I'm answering my own question.)

HI Gail,

It's so nice to hear from you. Please, know I am not a qualified "dream interpreter." I am 41 1/2 years into recovery. I have had dozens of dreams about returning to drinking.
I know what you mean by reporting, "they are so real." I never dreamed about getting smashed, only enjoying a bottle of beer or two. The dreams were so real I worried about telling my home group that I relapsed. Then I woke up. I realized it was a dream and upon that fact, I forgot about it and said, "thank you, God." If I were you I wouldn't worry about about it. Lot's of us have dreams like yours. I can't remember that last drinking dream I had. Maybe, I'll have one tonight but I promise I won't blame, Gail. Your doing great Gail. As a humorous aside I often dream I am recalled to the Air Force. I served from 1951-1955. So at 77 years of age I am recalled to serve. "Are you crazy I say I'm 77, I am going to write my Congressman." Then I wake up. This to seems super real. Gee, maybe I could become a fighter pilot and get a medal, perhaps some night I will dream that and I become an ace. I would like to be an ace.

Oh. oh, oh.....I do understand that one.  My first one found me awake and sitting on my couch so mad at myself I could spit nails.  I seem to get one now around my sober date....or right before.  My sponsor told me it was a matter of me being grateful that I do not have to live that way today....and go forward...never back.  So that is what I do.  I enjoy being sober today....and let tomorrow take care of tomorrow.  As long as I do today what I did yesterday, I will be absolutely ok....and alcohol will have no hold over me.  Hope that helps you like it did me.  God bless....

After a few years of sobriety, I still have those dreams from time to time.  I wake up and believe without a doubt that I MUST have drank or used!!!  They are very powerful dreams.  I find that in telling someone else, they lose their power.  I also think that they are normal and will always be a part of my life.  Maybe it is God's way of keeping me from getting too cocky about my sobriety...

If you are struggling, please talk to someone who can understand.  We all struggle from time to time.  It is normal.  The hard part - but the BEST part - is sharing with another person in recovery.

God bless!  ~ Leslie

Thank you so much to all of you. I guess I just need to accept these dreams for what they are, merely dreams. The good thing is that I love drinking as much as I do in my dreams and still being able to wake up refreshed, lol.
