I wanted to share that my son, who is my addict, got his 3 month chip. AA is working for him much better than NA did. I am so very proud of him.

Proud because now he is in a residential program that uses the 12 steps as its basis. He told me that THIS time, he earned the chip. THIS time, he's working the program.

I know that it is often said that relapse is part of recovery, so I'm not naive, and I don't think his path will be 'happily ever after.' But I am so pleased that he is the man he is today.

I am so glad he is doing well.  I guess my question is this....who says "Relapse is part of recovery"?  I am so grateful that I never heard that when I was getting sober.  What I heard was "Relapse is not a requirement to getting and staying sober".  Because of that, I have only one white chip...and this after a 33 year history of drink/drugs.  I have never had a relapse and it is not a part of MY recovery and my sober date is May 13, 1997.  Please help your son to know that relapse is not a requirement unless he chooses to make dying sooner.  I do understand that some people do relapse....and while anyone that relapses is always welcomed back, the big question is whether they will make it back before they die or spend the rest of their life in prison.  I am grateful that he is understanding the importance of sobriety...and hopefully, he will hear from some of the old timers that grabbed me and MADE me hear what they had to say...and then told me to make up my mind if I wanted what they had or not.  I did, so I am here today...sober.

Brenda, I agree!

I know that people do relapse and am glad they come back and are made welcome, but I get crazy when people say that relapse is part of recovery. No, relapse is when I stop working at my recovery.

Gotta chime in that yes, relapse is common, but I've never heard that it's part of recovery.  Recovery is that I NEVER have to go back there, contingent on me staying clean and sober one day at a time.

Anyway, whether in AA or Al-Anon or NA, all we have is one day and, for today, your son has his three months!!!

Congrats!!!

Beth
