I am the mother of 5 great children.  They range from 18(married) to 7.  I have been diagnosed with BPII, and BPD.  I have had medication support for 7 years and 2 hospitalizations.  I have been 'stable' since this last spring.

My children have seen me do alot of ugly things.  We have been through alot the last 3 years.  I am excited to be stable but it hurts to see what I/mental illness has caused.  My children remember so much more than I do about what I have done while cycling.

There is so much I want to ask, say and discuss.  Is there a resource/group for Bipolar parents with young children?  I need a friend!!!

I am glad you are looking for support. It can be traumatizing for all concerned at times when bipolar disorder is active. Fortunately there are many people like you looking to find the compassion you deserve.  NAMI has support groups in every state, and so does the DBSA (The Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance). You may want to look at Joanne Nicholson's work from the University of Massachusetts. She has studied parents of young children who live with mental illness. On a personal note my dad had bipolar disorder and we had some hard moments.  I would say based on my experience love endures even with manic difficulties. I became a doctor to help him.

Medical Director of NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness)
