Hi,
Well it depends. I would talk to the doc first. The ways I know to control it are weight loss (ie having a good bmi normal for the height). Workout which will rise the hdl (the good kind), cut out animal products (they rise tryi. and ldl). There is also metamucil, which studys shows lowers ldl (i think), but you need to ask a doc about it before starting. Then some people will just have to be on meds, b/c its genetic. (This would be me, with luck I will be starting on Monday {I'm 23}). What I would do is talk to the doc. and see if he can try a different one. My mothers cardo doc if on lipotor (sp) but his wife is on different one because of side effects.
Oh and no smoking.
Outside of those changes just think about what the possiblities of not being on meds, if it is gentic. My family is the case study in gentics and high cholesterol, I'll be the 3rd gen. which will be effected by it that we know of.
I know the feeling of not wanting to be on it too. But I just think about when i was little (6) when my mom had bypass and I don't want my kids to have to through that. Plus the meds are always changing and maybe soon they'll have a better fix.
I hope I answered your question. I've been going through kinda stuff since i was little, you might want to look at American Heart Assocation. They have some basic stuff.
