Hi,

I'm new here. Thanks for your time in advance.

About three weeks ago, after my morning run and sauna time, I noticed a women's fair being held at the gym. I stopped by and a lady offered to give me a free cholesterol check. I KNEW that I was okay but thought why not. I mean, I workout everyday, I watch my calorie intake, I run twice a week, I sit in the sauna 3-4 times a week...I thought that I had a good health plan going on.

I got my results today in the mail and am flabbergasted!

Total Cholesterol: 242
LDL Cholesterol: 147

I'm so confused here. I don't smoke. I workout. I'm 5'3 and 116 pounds. I thought that I was doing all the right stuff. I'm a woman on a budget and now I'm worried about having to see a doctor. I don't even know where to begin here. I'm scared to be quite honest. I knew that turning 35 this year meant getting older and being 5 years from 40 but I had no idea that at 35 I would be dealing with high cholesterol. How do I change eating habits that I thought were good? I don't know where to begin.

I could use some advice if anyone has any to offer.

Thank you,

-firebird-

Welcome to the HBP & HC board, Firebird!! I've had computer problems and so I wasn't able to get here sooner.

My high cholesterol is genetic. It really makes little difference in the foods I eat, because - according to my doctor - my body does not make very much "good" cholesterol. I do not eat anything that's loaded with calories and I get a little exercise (I'm disabled, which makes running impossible and bending or stooping very difficult.)

As with heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol doesn't choose what age the person is when it strikes. So many young people have had heart probs and that's very sad. I don't think we take care of ourselves in the way that we should. There's a lot of junk food, as well as sweet treats, that people consume every day. Not a good thing to do. Our planet is so fast-paced that we don't take the time to eat right.

I take Lipitor for my HC and it's been a miracle drug for me. My cholesterol is at a normal level and I feel much better, physically. You need to see your doctor asap so that he/she can get you started on bringing that HC down. With everything you are already doing to keep your body in shape and whatever else your doctor may recommend, you should be just fine. Keep the faith and do not for one minute think you're "abnormal."

I hope I have helped in some small way to put your mind at ease. Please, please, let me know how you're doing, okay?I'll be thinking of you!

Hugs, *C*

Thanks for your kind reply. I plan on setting up a doctor's appointment soon. I'll come back with what I learn.

Take care,
