I know of a family member who may need a urostomy. They are in their 80's. I am wondering how they would handle that surgery. How difficult it might be for them to care for it. What some of the common problems might be.

Hi julie364,

I searched with that word and came up with this information - colostomy:

http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/colostomy.html

I'm not sure if urostomy and colostomy are similar but that's what came up when I searched.

It does sound as though it might be difficult to have done especially if you're in your 80's.  However, if that's the only option and the doctors think they can handle it, he/she may have to go through with it.

Maybe you could also post on our Stomach/Bowel Disorders board and see what input they have:

My father-in-law had a urostomy about two years before he passed away.  He didn't find it very difficult to deal with at all and did not have complications from it.

You might find more information on our Cystitis, Bladder & UTIs message board.

Thanks for your reply. A supra catheter was put in instead of the urostomy. She has someone to help her with the drainage bag. I was told they plan to change it once a month. Not sure how that will go.
