Hello, I'm glad I happened to see this message board here on ivillage! Over this past week I've been doing a lot of research into why it is that I have an acne outbreak after eating wheat bread and wheat tortillas. I think I might be having a reaction to gluten. So, I've decided to do an experiment and not eat anything with gluten in it to see how my skin fares. I'm currently looking for alternative foods to eat that could replace bread & tortillas. I read on a website somewhere that basmati rice is safe/GF. Does that sound right??
Thanks in advance for any guidance and help.

Hello and welcome..

most rice is gluten free, except if it has been mixed in those quick package meals.i tell all my clients you must read

every label, before you buy, never take any ones word for things when dealing with the gluten and wheat free foods..

you health depends on you being very strict with everything you consume and put on your skin..

i am one who also suffers with the internal cd and the skin type which can be mistaken for acne at times..

you must watch your shampoos, creams, meds.oitments, soaps which i never use if need be you can use

a liquid soap or a gf/wf hair shampoo it does the same thing..lipstick also .never buy from any store on advice from

the sales person, they are there to sell their products, you have to know your products and the ingredients yourself

so check and recheck, and remember the manufactures can change their ingredients without warning

so dont take in for granted that once you buy something its always going to be gluten/wheat free.keep checking..

you will find lots of data and info here from past posts as well.we have tons of recipes too and general chatter and

support..nice to have you here..cheers Lynne

Ok, I don't know what happened, but I know I replied to this post. Yes, rice is fine and so are corn-based products. I know that there are corn tortillas (I believe that Old El Paso makes some) that you can use instead of the wheat flour ones.

You can also make rice flour based bread. I use Gluten-free Pantry bread in my bread machine and it turns out pretty good. It's a bit more crumbly than your wheat flour based breads, but that's because it doesn't have the glutens to hold it all together the same way "regular" bread does.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for your quick and friendly replies. I'm glad to hear that rice is safe. I think I'll stick with rice and only have the corn based products sparsely (I also try to stay away from HFCS).

I'm fairly sure the problem with my skin is gluten related. It's highly suspect considering that I eat mainly whole fruits and veggies, rarely meat, and only dairy/milk in my tea. A couple weeks ago, for a whole week I ate about double the portion of wheat products than I normally do, and my skin drastically flared up. It seemed very cause - effect.

I started the diet today. A good two weeks should give me an indicator as to whether or not the problem is gluten. I'll be sure to post the "results".

Oh, I also wanted to mention that you can also do potatoes as well. :) That's another good starch, if you wanted something filling, but not gluten-y. :)
