Ok, I'm a little freaked since I have to take antibiotics! The whole my birth control may be less effective is a pretty BIG DEAL if you're CFBC, but most don't seem concerned at all. And by most I mean those writing & fill the prescription. Sure there's a little sentence in the handout & a tiny sticker on the bottle, but is that really enough of a notice? NOT in my opinion! And I think others would agree or at least those that have told me they got PG while taking antibiotics & on the pill. Seems to happen quite a bit. What do you think?

could you use condoms while you're taking the antibiotics? i know it's annoying, but what's worse: using a condom, or getting pregnant?

That seems to be the recommended back up method. I was just a little surprised that this "side effect" wasn't discussed until I asked. Oh, if that's a concern then use back up for 30 DAYS, much longer than just while on meds. Maybe they figure everyone KNOWS about this & its over stepping to discuss this without the patient asking.

I agree that doctors and pharmacists need to do a much better job of telling people the side effects of the medications they are prescribing.  Antibiotics can definitely lower the effectiveness of the pill and doctors NEED to warn people that they should use a condom when on them.  I'd use a condom for a good 10 days after you finish the meds just to make sure they're all out of your system.  I'm guessing a lot of doctors don't give you the warning because they see that you're a woman and of "child-bearing age" and figure you probably won't mind it if you "accidentally" get pregnant.  Of course, the day that doctors and pharmacists become mind-readers is a far cry from now.

I agree that a lot of medical practitioners don't emphasize this risk nearly enough!

I had to have surgery a few years ago and one of my follow-up prescriptions was for an antibiotic. I asked the nurse about using them in conjunction with my pill and she laughed it off because I had stated on my paperwork that DH had a vasectomy. I pointed out that there are many women who are unaware of the risks of the pill's effectiveness being reduced while on antibiotics and I would rather listen to that caution than leave the office unaware.
