Heya ladies!

A few months ago I went to the dentist and she recommended I get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled especially one of them that has a huge cavity on it and would not be salvaged by getting a root canal.

I completely forgot about the whole ordeal until a few days ago. I was eating some cereal and I felt a weird sensation. The bad wisdom tooth cracked and half of it broke off. I would figure that I would have immense pain but I've had no pain at all. Is this normal? Why isnt there any pain even when half of the tooth is practically gone???? Weird huh?

Anyways, I'm going to set up an appointment to the dentist on Monday and see what happens. I'm just really curious on why I have no pain.....

Thanks!

-Lorena

Consider yourself very lucky Lorena! The way the tooth cracked must not have exposed the nerve...yet....be sure to get in asap and do not chew on that side. The other possibility is that since the tooth already was decayed and didn't bother you anymore; it's possible that the damage was done, you had pain at that time and it finally went away? If that is the case, you were very lucky to not have swelling and a lot more discomfort, along with an infection that you wouldn't have been able to ignore.

Here is some basic information about tooth decay that you may find interesting and should keep in mind for all of your remaining teeth.

Good luck and please keep us updated, OK?

hello!

i'm very glad to hear that you are making an appointment.

a few different things could have happened:

1. the crack wasn't to the nerve yet
2. the nerve could have been exposed long ago with the cavity and was already dead
3. the nerve canal could be very very small and you felt nothing

anyway, you are lucky there was no pain :)

Hello to the two ladies that responded to me!!

Here's a little update:

I called the dentist early this morning and they gave me an appointment for the same day! I went in thinking that they would just look at it and schedule me to get the extraction another day. Boy was I wrong!! They suggested to do it immediatly. I got to admit I almost chickened out because I had not mentally prepared myself. I bravely went ahead and decided to get the extraction done.

The shots werent bad at all since I knew what to expect from past experiences (I got bridge work done). After she numbed me up,I had to wait several minutes to take effect. Let me tell you something, these several minutes were the worst!!! I was shaking uncontrollably, meaning I could stop my legs, arms, stomach, and basicaly my whole body from shaking!! This is how nervous I was...I know, I'm pretty bad!

The doc came in and started the procedure. I didnt feel any pain at all except for a lot of pressure. I felt sorry for the doc because she's real petite and was basically fighting to get the damn tooth out. It took about 5-8 minutes but it felt like a whole hour to me. I feel relieved that I decided to remove it and now I'm just paying for it with bleeding and pain!

The doc gave me Tylenol 3 and gave me instructions. How long will the bleeding last? I'm scared as hell to eat something because of it. I'm scared that when I eat I'll swallow a bunch of blood...lol lol. Should I just eat with the gauze in my mouth? lol lol I know, real stupid question!! Sorry!

All in all, It wasn't that bad and if I HAD to do it again, I wouldnt be that scared!

Sending you bunches of healing hugs!!

I think it worked out well that the dentist wanted to do the extraction immediately, since human nature is to put off the inevitable, right?

What instructions were you given? You do need to be careful to allow the blood clot to form and then not dislodge it, but should have been given some idea of what to do.

Here is some general info about tooth extractions that may help, but if you have questions, please call the dentist in the morning and see what she recommends, OK?
