One of the things I have always picked up on is that abusers cannot tell the same story twice. If you listen to them answer a question and you can tell they aren't telling the truth as they make it up as they go. Another thing that is usually noticeable for me is no or poor eye contact.
When DD was a teen and out doing things she shouldn't have, she'd come home chewing gum (to cover the scent, I imagine) She never did at any other time
Based on experience (an ex-SIL who lies like a trooper), liars tend to get so involved in their lies, they forget who they told what, and eventually people start comparing stories and catch them out...
