Long story short, I had an ultra-sound back in June and the doctor said I have 2 cysts. One cyst is a "normal" one that many women get throughout their lives, the other one appears to be endometriosis related and could be what is preventing me from getting pregnant.

I waited for a few months to get a letter from the hospital inviting me to a laporasopy (?) surgery, but it never came. I finally was able to get through to the correct person and scheduled my surgery for the end of next month. That will be about 15 months of us TTC. (On a slight side note: I just bought ovulation strips and so far only negative responses. I've wondered if I'm even ovulating at all..and so far it looks like my concern is correct.)

Here in Finland, once a couple tries for a year without any success, there are services and several options in place to help with getting pregnant. This surgery will be the first step in whatever I need to get me going.

Problem is, I have no idea what is going to happen at the surgery or even what exactly the surgery is I am going to have. I will have a pre-op a week before, but I'm already so nervous and lost about what I need to do to get ready and what sort of questions to ask. Help!

Thanks heaps in advance.

Hi Heather,

I am in a similiar situation. Over the last 3 months I have gone from the Doctor finding one overian cyst (possible endo looking) on ultrasound to now I have 4 total! I just had that most recent u/s yesterday so I am still waiting on the Dr. to call me to give her prognosis. But she had already wanted to do the surgery when the first cyst was found but I wanted to wait awhile and see if it went away.

I am also worried about surgery. I know it is very routine but any surgery still seems scary and has risks involved. It seems like the doctors take such a relaxed approach to recommending surgery and don't realize how it impacts your life!

I don't have a lot of information for you. Just wanted to post this so you know there are other women out here going through a similiar situation!

Best of luck

Kathleen

Thanks for your reply, Kathleen. Sorry to hear you might have more cysts than you originally thought.

Since my original post, I have made an appointment at a fertility clinic (first appointment is free!), to get a 2nd opinion about my cysts and the need for surgery. With the ultrasound and info from the first visit it will allow us to decide what sort of path we want to take.

You are right, surgery of any sort is scary.
In one sense, this surgery is coming at a bad time. My work's christmas party is that following Friday.. I hope I'll be well enough to join (I don't need or want to drink, but just show up and participate), although it might be strange to show up to the party Friday after work when I've been off all week. And the other thing is I have started Taekwon-do and I'll have to miss at least 2 weeks worth of classes plus I'm not sure I can take the belt test.
I know in the long run, and logically, this surgery is a good thing if I want to get pregnant, but in the short term, it is just messing with my life! ;)

Take care and I hope you get your results soon.
