ARG! Our health insurance premiums are going to skyrocket this year (no surprise there really) so I checked out one of those "affordable" insurance sites and I'm stunned-really really stunned over the information and ridiculous suggestions I got. First of all, our daughter with Epilepsy is basically not insurable under most plans because of her pre-existing condition. Secondly, there are options available but her meds would not be covered for several months because of her pre-existing condition. Thirdly, I'd like to know what on earth would be considered unaffordable insurance if the outrageous quotes we got were considered affordable! ARG

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Health insurance seems like such a scam at times. When I was going to move in with my fiance, now DH, I was looking at a possible job change and I needed to know what I could do for health insurance. I looked at the "low cost" health insurance options and it was a joke. They would cover me, but only generic meds, if I was lucky. I also remember something about only being able to get 1 or 2 dr visits a year too. When I looked at the money numbers side by side I come out ahead driving an hour to my job so I can keep my insurance instead of working 2 part time jobs, paying $500 a month for health insurance and basically not getting anything for it.

How much are your premiums going up this year? Maybe is it worth staying with it just so you can have good coverage. The way I look at health insurance it I would rather pay a little more for something good and be able to get what I need and go with out something else. My parents did not have heath insurance when I was growing up, so I know that having it now is a great thing to have. I pay the extra $$ so I can have a higher plan so I can see the drs I need to see. I would rather go without the new pair of jeans and be able to get my meds and see my dr.

I too believe it's nothing but a scam! My parents had 7 children, one with a serious heart issue and all of us with bad allergy problems and never had health insurance. The difference was they could actually afford to take us to the dr. and get medication without signing our lives over to the creditors. The problem with health care is health insurance -I'm convinced. If I placed the hundreds of dollars a month that I pay for health insurance premiums into a bank account, we'd be able to pay for nearly anything that came down the pike. For 20+ years we've been paying for health care premiums only to have outrageous deductibles and co-pays. If we'd saved all that money and just paid as we went we'd have quite a big savings account these days. The problem is that we're all too scared now.

My sister and her husband have never had health insurance (can't afford it and can't get help for it). They pay as they go and most of the time their costs are only half as much as ours (or less) since they are paying cash. And they aren't paying monthly premiums! Completely crazy isn't it?!

Wow Karla!  I think there is no doubt that there needs to be a change with pre-existing conditions and I would think/hope anyone with a pre-existing condition or a family member with one would agree.  I now have one and though I can't see needing to change health insurance I saw it coming and we got long term care insurance before it was a problem and before they would charge high rates because of it.

Good luck with it!

You were very smart indeed to have purchased long term care when it was still affordable. I just watched my parents struggle through the end of my father's life with inadequate coverage and the shock and horror of how expensive things could really get. It's a crying shame a man works 50+ years paying his taxes diligently and struggling to make payments for a small peice of real estate and home only to have to take out loans and such against it to pay for his diapers, oyygen tank and bed for his final days on earth.
