He gets state funded Medi-Cal at this point. It is something we would like to have him off of, because it limits his/our life in so many other ways. He always has to be careful not to earn too much or have too many assets, etc. His meds, Drs. appts and monitoring lab tests cost about $12K a year, which we simply couldn't afford out of pocket. Plus, all we'd need is one, minor, bi-polar spending spree, and we couldn't afford his meds and then....disaster.

Recent conversations with his social worker lead me to discover that , should we marry, not only would I have to liquidate retirement accounts, but my income would mean his share of cost with Medi-cal would be $798 a month. He would be allowed to stay on Medi-Cal, apparently because he has a "verified mental illness." I guess that happens when you get locked up in a state mental hospital and you are declared indigant at that moment, at least here in California.

LOL, ROFL, free samples!!!

Have you not heard?

Now that pharmaceutical companies are reaching people so well via TV commercials & Internet ads docs no longer get samples. We live in a world of us telling the doctor how to treat us because we're more educated then they are due to the Internet & TV. So why would they need to leave it up to the expertise of somebody who's been educated for umpteen years to recommend which drug for us to try?

Free samples are 'has beens'

;-)

...sorry, a person very sore meds are increased by 250% to pay for these ads...

My brother lives in Denmark and all his care, hospitalization, meds, visiting nurse and disability pension are covered by the national health service/government there. Of course there are negatives, and right now we are not very happy with the care he is receiving. It also means that there aren't any real alternatives to the government care. But, all in all, it seems to beat almost anything available in the US.
