Montel Williams was at our state capital yesterday making a pitch for the medical use of marijuana to help with pain for people having debilitating diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and Multiple Sclerosis. Williams was DXed with MS in 1999. He related that he has tried to manage his pain through prescription medications such as OxyContin to morphine only to damage his kidneys, leaving him incapacitated for awhile and still not managing his pain. A person from my local area spoke and said that smoking marijuana allows him to continue to work whereas prescription meds did not. He was paralyzed in a diving accident, but can now walk with the aid of crutches. He has sharp, shooting pain in his muscles that he is able to manage with marijuana. Critics say that by legalizing marijuana for medical use only is sending a bad message to our children.

So, what is your opinion on the controversial subject?

Gentle Hugs,

Having grown up as a teenager in the 70's marijuana was the drug of choice. Personally, I did not like it. However, I know several people my age that still use it for recreationally purposes. A GF of mine, can not get off it. So, from the standpoint that legalizing marijuana use for medical purposes only, could open doors for the legalization of it across the board or the notion that it is ok to use this by children, does concern me.

On the other hand, watching my Dad suffer through pain as he was facing death from 4th stage cancer, I would in a minute have given him anything to easy his pain. The drugs that they gave him in the last few months of his life did little to control his pain and made him a zombie. From the quality of life perspective, I think had he had the option, marijuana would have been better for him and his family.

So, in my opinion, I am for the use of marijuana for medical purposes, but believe that it becomes a prescription medication prescribed by a doctor. I have read where they want to allow the patient to be able to grow their own. I think that is opening a can of worms.

Ok, who's next.

Gentle hugs,

I agree that it should be a perscription drug. My first instict is to think that this would end up making street use of it, more of a problem, but then I think I really doubt it would make much difference. I don't think they should allow people to grow their own. It would definately open up a can of worms as you say.

I'm not sure if I would take it or not. If I had terminal cancer, yes I would. For fibro, I don't think I would. I'd be too afraid of getting addicted to it.

I was a recreational user in high school, and would use it now for fibro/lupus pain if it were legal. I was much more "lucid" while smoking pot than one prescription pain killers.

I think it should be controlled, and prescribed, but definitely legal.

I think it should be legalized, but controlled, like a previous poster mentioned.  I think that a prescription should only be given when there's reason to believe marijuana can be beneficial to that individual patient, based on studies or experience or whatever.

I think it's sad that some of the current methods of pain control that we currently have available are much more dangerous and addictive than marijuana.
