Boy, did I ever, for my younger daughter!! This is from some years back, but it is some thoughts on these medical mysteries: Musings on “Medical Mysteries” http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2007/12/musings-on-medical-mysteries.html

We actually made a major breakthrough right here on one of the iVillage Boards - on a sleep disorders board when someone gave me a name for a rare condition I'd never heard of before. Back then, there was no organization for it, and most of the descriptions of it proliferated on the Internet was incorrect.

In her case, one diagnosis would not have been enough since by the time we started getting meaningful help for her besides just throwing psychotropics onto the fire to dampen down just that one set of symptoms, she had multiple conditions. Her body was disintegrating.

In fact, the underlying hypothalamic dysfunction diagnosis she has common in conditions diagnosed as "mental illnesses" in the DSM-IV), wasn't even listed as a distinct diagnostic entity until the ICD-10 manual of diagnostic codes.

Ahhh... if only the Internet had been around when she was an infant, we'd at least maybe have realized that what looked like a sleep disorder really was a sleep disorder even though the pediatrician kept reassuring us that the baby was fine (my parents kept insisting that this baby was NOT "fine.")

For all the bad that one hears about the 'net today, it's done some very good things. Isn't it great that people can find info on rare conditions & connect w/others who suffer from them? Thx for sharing, Naomi:) jan
