I think I am about to the point of needing to do more than diet.  <sigh>  I want an idea when I go in what route I would like to go.

Doesn't metforim cause lows?  Januvia doesn't though does it?  Can you take it be itself?  I suppose byetta would be a possibility but I don't know if I could do shots.  I know some of you do now...........

My numbers scare me.  I can't get them back down.  The last few days they have been higher than I like.  REALLY higher than I like!  This morning, It was 130.  Before lunch it was 140.  Think before supper it was 159 and about 3 hours later 189.  And that is without eating any carbs inbetween!  And eating pretty darn healthy!  Breakfast...  1 scrambled egg on a ww muffin and a slice of cheese.  I did later have an atkins drink with 2 net carbs.  For lunch I had a crab cake, no filler, a lettuce salad with blue cheese dressing, left over steamed cauliflower and a sugar free jello.  Only thing in between was swiss cheese.  For supper, a prepared chicken kiev, I can't remember but it think 11 grams of carbs.  I bit over a serving of brussel sprouts (9 grams) and a slice of tomato and about a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese (5 grams of carbs.  And sliced peaches for 5 grams too.

I have noticed before that if I don't eat enough carbs my glucose is up.  Could I have done that?

I hurt my leg about a month ago and have not been able to be on it..  broke a bloodvessel and not pretty!

Thoughts, ideas?

Cheryl,

You really need to know what your A1C reading is currently. Most probably your doc will start you on metformin as that is really a first line drug. Just remember to start slowly with a low dose and remember to ahve something in your tummy before you take it. Metformin does not cause low blood sugar and in some people it cause weight loss. Januvia is expensive and will only lower your A1C 1/2 point. It also doesn't cause lows and encourages weight loss. Byetta you know about. There is a new version coming out soon that you only take once per week. Do know also that certain drugs cause weight gain. Namely Actos, Avandia and all the sulfonylureas cause weight gain and it can be in the 30 pound range.

I think that is enough information for tonight. Please let me know what you doctor recommends. Nurse Mary Frances would recommend metformin but of course I can't prescribe!

In August the dr gave me orders for blood work but no a1c.  I asked what was on it when the nurse brought it to the room.  I have not done it yet because I think what is on it, I can get done at a local hospital where a bank sponsors the tests for a small fraction of the price but that is only once a month and I don't always know when.  It is next week.  But they don't do the a1c.

I have heard about the once a week byetta coming...  Will be looking for more on that.  I might be able to handle that!  I will probably take a cheat sheet on meds that cause a weight gain.... lol  My dr will listen to me.  He is a keeper!

I cut out the English muffin this morning.  My numbers were 120?  Better, but not where it should be.  Thankfully I convinced my dr to let me have enough strips so I can check more than once a day.  I may run out if I keep testing multiple times but I will handle that when the time comes.

Our weather is supposed to be nice for awhile.  I will 'try' to walk.  Yesterday I walked around a store, just because I was there and had time.  And it was raining outside too.  NOT near enough steps but more.

Just because it's a whole wheat muffin doesn't mean the carbs are low enough for you, personally. With limited test strips, what I'd do is test before and after breakfast for several days, tweaking the breakfast based on the test results (ww muffin, 1/2 muffin, no muffin, with protein, without protein, etc). Then several days of before/after lunch (with tweaking). Then several days of before/after dinner. Then last thing at night and first thing in the morning - this one will catch the 'dawn syndrome' most likely, if the pre-bed number is good and it's high before breakfast, then your liver is dumping glucose at around 3 or 4 am.

Also, pairing the testings will let you see how much difference you get - you want to keep the change from pre to post meal under 40 pts (I think that's the number). So, if you start at 120 before breakfast (which is not great but not awful) and you end up at 142, that's different than starting at 105 and ending up at 142. KWIM?

As I said, it was an English muffin.  24 grams of carbs with 5 being fiber.  Basically all the carbs with what I ate for breakfast yesterday.

SOOOO  today I ate 2 eggs scrambled, with mushrooms and a slice of cheese.  I went back and had 2 pieces of toast for 18 grams of carbs.  My glucose was 122 fasting and a couple of hours after breakfast it was 177......  <sigh>

Now it was 128 3 hours after that when I ate lunch.  Lunch was a lettuce salad, with grape tomatoes, some avacado to make it more 'special' with some chicken breast and blue cheese dressing.  Few carbs.  And then I had a sugar free jello.  I will most likely not be able to check it 2 hours after.  I will be gone.  BUT I know I am doing the best I can!

I had to go to Walmart.  It is being re-done and sadly couldn't find what I wanted.  Walked all over the store, finally found the shelf it was supposed to be on but it was empty.  So, I now have over 4000 steps and more to come today!  That may have helped the glucose drop too.......
