Hi,

I have a close friend who is acutely ill with ulcerative colitis and has been housebound for 2 weeks or so and has dropped 25 lb in 3wks. He's fairly newly diagnosed, is allergic to mesalamine (can tolerate a low dose rectally, but it doesn't much help), and has not responded to cortisone enema. He has zero appetite and sometimes vomiting if he eats. Eating makes the diarrhea worse. Can anyone tell me what the treatment is likely to involve if he's hospitalized.

Also, anyone on here type 2 diabetic with UC?

Thanks!

Jeannie

Hi Jeannie! I am very sorry to have missed your post until now. How is your friend doing? I hope he has improved.

I am sure that hospitalization would include IVs and other supportive kinds of treatment, but I am not sure what else.

Here is a link to some information iVillage has on colitis: http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/ulcerative-colitis.html

I hope that will help some.

I would also suggest that you post in the section above to ask the expert, Dr Rubin. He will undoubtedly be able to give you better information than I can.
