Hi- I have had an HSG, back in May, (the doctor required it before he would prescribe Clomid) and I must say it was extremely uncomfortable. The dye itself did not hurt, however the clamps they used to get the camera and dye in was very painful. The whole procedure probably only lasted about 10 minutes and I did experience cramping after. I had my period at the time so maybe this had an impact on the test. I wish you the best of luck though with yours!

I just had an HSG on Wednesday --- I just got through my first round of IUI (after 3 miscarriages). The insemination was on Thursday and now it's waiting time.

Anyway, my doc prescribed 4 anti-biotics to be taken the night before the HSG and 1 valium to take as I was in the waiting room right before the HSG (she also said I should take 3 Advil at the same time, which I did).

I was all relaxed from the valium (but not TOO relaxed). Unfortunately, the table was so freezing that I couldn't relax as much as I wanted! I would say the entire procedure took about 15 minutes. Of that, 2 minutes consisted of intense cramping -- they came on suddenly and then after 2 minutes they went away as quickly as they came. I just kept telling myself a) this is nothing compared to (what I'm sure) childbirth is like and b) after this is over I finally get to eat! (I was only allowed to have a "light" breakfast the morning of --- and the HSG was scheduled for 2PM. I was STARVING.)

Afterward, there was light bleeding. I felt completely fine. There were no cramps after I was done. And there was a great Mexican restaurant across the street from the hospital that my DH took me to and watched me scarf down a cheese enchilada. (-:

All in all, it wasn't as bad as I anticipated.

Hi there,

I've had two HSGs in the last couple years and neither was bad at all.  Not the funnest thing you'll ever do, but it's really not so bad.  I took two advil about an hour before and didn't experience any real pain.  It was just mildly uncomfortable.  Good luck!
