My mom just got back her PAP results.  She does not feel symptoms, but her result contained 'squamous cell carcionoma'.  I did not know what this meant so I looked it up online of course...and I see everything from pre-cancer to high probability it is cancer...can someone help me??  I'm getting the increasing impression she is being sent for a colopscopy and biopsy just to CONFIRM our worst fears!!  It's been about 6 years since her last smear, which apparently contained abnormal but ultimately benign cells.  I can't believe I'm doing this research for my own mom! :(  Thank you for letting me vent if nothing else, as I think I might lose it if I didn't!!!

Abnormal pap smears and cervical abnormalities are relatively normal. The good news is that for those women who get their pap smears every year - it is highly unlikely they would turn cancerous, because the doctors catch them soon enough during the yearly paps to remove them before they do so. However, when women have not had a pap smear in years, the likelyhood of those cell changes being cancerous when they do have their pap smear is greater. This is why yearly pap smears are so important.

The good news is that even if this is the case with your mom, all hope is not lost. The colposcopy and biopsy will tell your mom's doctor exactly where the abnormal cells are located on the cervix and how severe they are. Depending on those results, the doctor will most likely want to remove the bad cells. And as long as those cells are only located right in the cervix, no major surgury or treatment should be necessary. It's pretty easy to remove as long as it stays right in the cervix.

This is all pretty common and you guys will get through it. Hopefully, the cancer has not spread beyond the cervix and will be easily treated. Keep us updated.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom's results. When is her colposcopy & how soon till those results are available. In many cases they can get all the cancer during that procedure. I hope that's true for your mom.

How are you both doing? I hope she isn't being too hard on herself for going 6 yrs without at pap. . . .can't go back and change it and after this expereince I'm sure that your mom and every one woman who knows her will be having them done on a regular basis.

I went for paps every year, yet was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year and needed a hysterectomy. When my pap in Aug/07 came back with questionable cells they re-did the sample from 2006 and found out that they read it wrong - it wasn't clean after all. They also re-checked 2005 & 2004 and both of those were normal.

Wishing you both all the best,

Jo

Thank you both for your posts!  I'm doing a lot better, and my mom is doing ok.  Admittedly I was not feeling my best when I got this news either (little sleep the night before for mundane reasons) so that made it worse!  While she has not dwelled on it, I imagine my mom probably IS beating herself up a bit for not going sooner, but she has put her faith in God to help her accept whatever comes next, and we're both now focusing on taking steps to do what needs to be done from here on.  I've tried to put this is in perspective while we wait to find out more, because we truly don't know enough to start freaking out either!

Jo Ann, thank you for your background.  I'm sure if my mom, or me for not hounding her, does get to really beating herself up I can use stories like this to help her or me feel better, and that is absolutely priceless.  I hope you are doing well after your procedure.

God bless you both!
