Hi All! I've been a couple times before with questions as my migraines have been more frequent over the last year. I usually get them after exercise, but it's not every time. I average once a month but everyone once in a while, i get them like once a week. I LOVE to run, it's what keeps me sane and normal. I had ran a half marathon in September, but I got a migraine afterwards and it killed the day. That one scared me since I just ran 13 miles and then, couldn't keep any liquids down. I also had to leave new running friends, and looked like a total jerk.

I got another migraine last week after I was working on running speed drills. I'm almost afraid to run because I don't know if a migraine is going to ruin my evening. I guess I'm just frustrated and angry! I think many of you have felt that way. Why can't I get a migraine after the dentist or OB/GYN, something I hate anyways! ARgh!

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly triggers my migraines. I think i might have it narrowed down to two different things. I will sometimes rush out the door to run after work, and not eat anything. Maybe the drop in blood sugar?
OR, when I'm running hard or I'm intense in any other activity, I might tense up my lower neck and shoulders too much.

So, I'm starting to do muscle relaxation checks every .25 miles and eating fruit snacks before exercising. I'm crossing my fingers on this working.

I don't know if I really have a question, but I needed to vent and wanted to vent to people who understand.

Hi Valerie! Good to hear from you again but sorry you are in pain. I would research exercise-induced migraines to read about various triggers, and how to prevent it. It could be something as simple as increasing hydration (electrolytes), needing to eat, etc. Or, they may not be preventable for you. In the second case, I suggest consulting your doctor to try various migraine treatments. Abortive medications like Triptans can stop a migraine in its tracks for many people.

Vents welcome anytime. Let us know if you have any further questions. Best wishes.

Hi Kate!
I do take Maxalt and have tried several others. The only problem is, I can't keep them down. My stomach shuts completely down and I can't ingest anything until the migraine is completely gone. They give you the Maxalt that dissolves under your tongue as samples, but I never get that kind when I get a script filled. I think I was more successful with the dissolving med than the regular pill form. I think I hate the nausea part the most!

I have been to a neuro and had an MRI and EEG and they're both clear. Thanks for the electrolyte advice! I think I'm going to add gatorade sprinkle to the water i bring with me.

Definitely go for the dissolving Triptans then. That's really important to have on hand. Another suggestion is to ask for Zofran or another anti vomiting medication. Zofran is another dissolving tab so that's why I mention it. You can take that first and wait a bit to take any pain meds or Triptans. Minimizing the nausea can also bring down your pain level as well as make the Triptans more digestible into your system. I think having a light snack with protein and complex carbs (whole grains) would be another good idea to try before a workout. Many people will get a headache after a workout, but for those prone to migraines it is a lot worse! Do everything you can to prevent them as yours sound especially miserable. Best wishes.
