Hello all,

just entered this message board and noticed your hearache articles. I have been on Topomax for a few years and it has saved my life! Was unwilling to keep up with migraines any longer and told Dr do something today or else!! Yes I did get the numb fingers etc so I just cut back as much as I could on my own. Life is great sorry it took 45 years! Oh well. Good health to all, Kim

Hi Kim! Welcome to the group. Feel free to start a new post to introduce yourself and share as little or as much as you'd like about your migraine journey. Thank you for sharing about Topamax. That's great to hear! What else had you tried before it? Best wishes and hope to chat with you soon.

Hi all...

I was on Topamax for almost 9 years...as an adjunct to depression meds. It helped tremendously for just about the whole time. It helped me lose weight at times, especially initially I lost 20 lbs with diet and exercise and kept it off easily. However, I had pervasive numbness and tingling in my hands and feet whenever it got cold or damp. But the biggest thing with Topamax, for me, was memory loss. I forgot everyday things as well as major events! Then, this past year, when I told the MD my s/sx depression were worsening, he increased me from 100mg daily to 200mg. I immediately started getting tremors in my face, below my lip, and especially my lower eyelid. It looked like it was dancing, it was so embarassing. I also noticed tremors all over...muscles I didn't know existed came to life! So then I changed to Geodon...awful, awful awful! Same side effects but I became angry and exhausted. Then onto Trileptal...made me want to crawl in a hole and not come out! I seriously wanted my Topamax back, for its mood stabilizing qualities. However, the memory loss, numbness and tingling and tremors aren't worth it. Now I am on Lexapro and Abilify...just started the Abilify, waiting to see how it does.

Hope this helps anyone interested in Topamax side effects. I'd say the benefits outweigh the side effects, if you can handle memory loss. That was the worst. Now my short term memory has improved tremendously!

Good luck!

Amy :)

Hi Amy! Good to see you back here. Thank you for sharing. Yes, Topamax can be tough with side effects for many people. Everyone responds so differently too. The cognitive difficulties were the worst for me, but what sent me running away from it was hair loss. I ended up getting hair loss with all three anti seizure medications I tried. Glad to hear you are trying a new combination. Please let us know how you do on it. Best wishes.

Thanks for the welcome!

As with most migraine sufferers its been most of my life. I think only during my pregnancy did I ever feel free. Back in the day I spent many times clawling on the floor screaming in pain and wait it out. My grandma would send me 222 from Canada (codeine) which helped for years. Tried Prozac, helped a little not worth the side effects. Did allergy injections as mold is bad for me and the winter I seem to get more headache than usual. That was expensive. Now I am on Topomax and it a miracle. Helps alot and I take Fiorcet pain meds at the start and Maxhalt if its a biggie! I found that everytime I  go winetasting its a sure bet for a headache at 3am. But I cant stop the fun I have with the girls once a month so I am very careful not to do more than a sip of each red.

Hope this isnt too much but thats about it, Kim
