...after an outbreak?

My boyfriend was diagnosed with genital herpes about 9 months ago. He went in for an STD/HIV test (prior to us getting sexually involveD) not even realizing he had genital herpes, so it was quite a shock when he received the diagnosis.

He's been on Valtrex ever since and takes it daily. However, about a week and a half ago there was a three day lapse in his prescription. He didn't take the meds for three days. About two or three days later, he began to show the symptoms of an outbreak- redness, itchiness, etc. He immediately began to take the meds again and the symptoms went away within a day ago- this was about three days ago.

Also, this is the first outbreak he has had since receiving the diagnosis and beginning Valtrex nine months ago.

How soon are we "safe" to have sex again? Once the Valtrex is in the system to supress herpes and the symptoms vanish, are we in teh clear? Or should we wait for a few more days?

Thanks!

Hi,

Herpes can be transmitted with or without an outbreak, so to say you are "in the clear" would not be a true statement.  HOWEVER, it has been proven that with the use of Valtrex and condoms, the chance of transmitting herpes is GREATLY reduced.  After an outbreak though, it's best to wait until the sores are completely healed before resuming sexual relations.  This includes just genital to genital contact without intercourse.

Hope this helps!

Hugs!
