I've been dating this guy for a short time, and we recently had the sexual history talk. His last sexual encounter was a one night stand in April (9 months ago). He used protection, but the condom slipped (or something like that) and they had to stop to put on a new condom. A few days after the incident he claims to have had mild itching in the genital area. He was tested shortly after that with all STD tests coming back negative. Still worried about hte condition and the itching and redness he sometimes experienced he was tested a second time, again with the test coming back negative. He says he has never had any blisters or sores, just redness and itching. Also one time he had what looked like a rash on his upper/inner thighs. He claims to have become convinced that he contracted herpes from the one night stand and had a third test run for herpes a little over six months after the incident. He has seen three different doctors, with three negative test results, and two doctors concluding that the itching is just "jock itch." My question is whether there is any possibility that he would have three negative tests and still have herpes. From listening to him, and knowing his sexual history (which only includes having slept with one girl before hte one night stand) I feel that this is a fear that he has manifested. He seems really bothered by the fact that he had a one night stand. He has also become very educated about the herpes virus. Still, while I think he is just over reacting, its a serious issue that I do not want to brush aside. So medically speaking, what are the chances that he has herpes, despite the 3 negative test results? Sorry if this is confusing....the situation has been rather confusing. Thank you.

Since you didn't indicate what type of herpes tests he had, I am going to assume that he had the blood test.   And it is true that the herpes blood tests have higher false positive/negative results than do the swab tests, the probability of having 3 false negative results is highly unlikely.   So I would say chances are that your bf is negative for herpes.  My first thought, after reading your post, was that your boyfriend contracted a yeast infection from this one night stand.  Yeast infections can be transferred back and forth between partners, that is why it is suggested that both be treated when, most typically, the female is diagnosed with a yeast infection.  Itching and redness, and even a rash are common symptoms of yeast in men.

Hope this helps!

Hugs!
