I had my first outbreak and was diagnosed with GH Jan 7th - unfortunately both HSV 1 and 2. Didn't even think that was possible. There weren't too many sores and I was prescribed Valtrex and was told things should begin to heal in about 2 weeks, but I still feel very itchy and tingly, my lymph nodes are swollen, I have to strain to urinate, my neck is stiff and sore... it just seems endless. And now it feels like I'm getting a reoccurance (same symptoms as before the last outbreak - tingling and numbness in feet, more tingling around area of initial sores). Is this possible?? I would have thought the anti-virals would have cut back on the chances. My bf is as devistated as I am (looks like he may have given it to me because of previous infection he assumed was razor burn and uti - but won't know for sure till he gets tested), and we are very supportive of each other, but the constant symptoms are making me very depressed. I feel like I will never be normal again. Has anyone had a similar experience??

Hi and welcome,

Unfortunately it is not uncommon to have back to back outbreaks with the initial outbreak because the first outbreak is usually the most severe and the body hasn't learned how to recognize the virus in order to keep it in "check".  Also, it's not uncommon for the Valtrex to just not work.  Just like antibiotics and other prescription drugs, you have to find the one that will work the best for you.  Did you doctor just give you like 7 days or so of the Valtrex?  Call them back if they did and ask for another prescription to be called in for you.  If that doesn't clear it up this time, then ask them to try another anti-viral to see if it works better.  I also suggest taking L-Lysine which is an over the counter suppliment that you can buy just about anywhere.  It will help boost your immune system.  Check with the doctor, however, to make sure you don't have any situations in which you would not be able to take it.

In time your body will learn the recognize this virus and will keep it in check making the outbreaks fewer and of less duration.  You are still normal, and I promise, after you read, learn and get educated about this virus you will feel a ton better.

Hugs!
