I am hypo (developed after having my daughter) and have been on Synthroid for about a year now.  I have never been level and have required many dosage adjustments.  A couple months ago my TSH was 3.88 so my endo increased my dosage from 50 mcg to 75 mcg.  Then a  month later my TSH was .59 and I was having hyper symptoms.  He decreased my dose to only 6 days a week.  So, I just had my blood drawn again and I was assuming it would be between 1 and 2 because I feel fine.  My TSH is even lower, .46.  So, now I am on 50 mcg 5 days a  week and 75 only 2 days a week.   My doc explained that the TSH lags behind.

I am confused about this.  Does that mean that this result reflects how I was feeling 6 weeks ago?  If so, that would make sense!

My dh and I want to try to conceive and my endo said it might be best to wait but I feel FINE which leads me to believe that my TSH result is not accurately reflecting what's really going on.  My T4 was normal.  We really don't want to wait because it feels like it's never going to be a good time.  I don't want to risk anything, but like I said I do feel normal.

Any suggestions?

Hi amyc2874,

Welcome to our board.

I've been hyper until just recently so I haven't heard about the lag in the TSH so I don't have an answer for you.  Maybe someone else here has experienced that.  Your TSH did change a lot with that dose change in just a month.  I guess these meds are pretty sensitive and tend to affect our levels rather dramatically.  Do you get tested again in a month?

Yes, I am getting tested again in one month.  I'm hoping someone else can have some input on the TSH issue.  Thanks :)

I've never heard that the TSH lags but I have heard that it doesn't show the whole picture. Everything I've read recommends getting your Free T3 and Free T4 tested along with TSH. And if you have any signs of Hashimotos or Graves then you should also get your TGab and TPOab antibodies tested. This should give your doctor a better picture of whats going on.

I would agree with tishyri on this.  It seems to take all the tests to get the whole picture.
