You don't have to answer this on here for obvious reasons, but do you have any other female problems such as bladder or uterine prolapse? The reason I am asking is because I, too, am 48 and am scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (TAH-BSO - I call it gutting me like a fish, because there won't be anything left when they're done), and a bladder lift. I have 3rd degree (the worst you can have) bladder prolapse and 2nd degree uterine prolapse. I kind of went through the same thing with my periods that you have been through except I had 2 D&C's and with the second one had uterine ablation therapy. For most women, they said they stop bleeding for 6 months afterwards and then start again. However, I bled for 6 months and then stopped and haven't had a period in 6 years I think. Unfortunately, I still have all the symptoms as if I am ovulating and going to have a period (PMS), I just don't have the bleeding (which is wonderful).
My FSH has fluctuated so they figure I am heading toward menopause, and because of the bladder prolapse my doctor and urologist are all for me having surgery. I don't know if it helps that I work in the medical field and know these doctors or not, but my GYN doctor said she wouldn't do it until I was late 40's when I asked several years ago (at the time of the 2nd D&C). Guess I'm close enough now. I guess if it were me, I'd go for a second opinion (maybe with a female GYN doctor who might be more sympathetic to your issues). It sounds like your doctor was either having a bad day or plain and simple doesn't think there's enough reason to do it. Having worked in the medical field for 29 years, I believe 2nd opinions are always a good idea if you are questioning your doctor's opinion. You have a family history that should matter IMHO.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.
