My DH and I have been struggling with secondary unexplained infertility for 5+ years. We have a 9 year old daughter who was conceived about 2 months after we decided to try for a baby the first time. I am so frustrated because nobody seems to know why I'm now unable to conceive. We did 3 unsuccessful rounds of IUI about a year ago, and I just finished my first unsuccessful IVF (received results of beta last Fri.) I feel like we've come to the end of the road, and I don't know what to do. We can't afford another round of IVF since our insurance won't cover it. If anybody has some tips or advice, I'd love to hear them. At this point, I'm willing to try about anything.

Hi.. we are in the same boat... I am 36, Dh 41... DD7 on really first month that we tried.

trying now 5 1/2 (closer to 6 years)

since then 2 IUI-BFN, 4 IVF- 1- chemical, 2- BFN, 1- 9wk M/C not in that order... 2 REs, 1 Urologist, 1 Hemotologist.... used menopur, gonal F, Bravelle, Ganerilix, Lupron microdose, assorted other stuff ... not all together of course

we have been tested for everything... right now we are focusing on my DH.. his numbers are good, not fab but good... we sent out to further testing of the Sperm to some lab in NCarolina I think? ...

we make about 8-12 eggs per IVF but only have a few left w/ nothing to freeze.. our last IVF (june 09) we put back 2 perfect day 3 - 8 cell grade A and got BFN

I did a thrombophilia panel- nothing, all genetic markers (I am jewish ashkenaz) come back perfect for both of us..

I hear you about the money we paid out of pocket for all our Medication (not covered) and some of teh IVF (coverage changed so we got an extra cap!)

See what your RE says .. make sure you and your DH dont have a lingering infection that can cause an issue

good luck

jen

Hello...

This reply shares your grief...My BNF happened yesterday with my peiord starting right after I heard via telephone.

I am questioning if it's possible to start progesterone right after I ovulate next time on my own....but I'll have to wait unitl Nov 19th to hear from my physician whether this has consequences  ...  my DH is unfortunately a serious male factor in all this....it's seriously a problem b/c my clinic decides to tell me only after I called back to see when I would try another IVF and they tell me they close the clinic to clean the labs for the entire months of Nov and Dec.....that's an outright lie!    I was doubly shocked by this and feel sincerely cheated by this facility....

wishing you some hope and sucess..

S

Thanks for responding to my post- I'm sorry to hear about the frustrations with your clinic. It is stressful enough without without adding that into everything. I was wondering the same thing about the progesterone. I usually start spotting 2-3 days prior to my "real" cycle, and thought maybe that would help extend my luteal phase. We've decided not to do another round of IVF (at least anytime in the near future), so I'm trying to do as much as I can to increase fertility on my own. I wish you the best of luck in this emotional and frustrating roller coaster, and please know that there are people (like me) who understand how you're feeling and what you're going through.

Hi and Welcome,

I too have secondary infertility.  We have been trying for almost 3 years for #2.  DD came after only the second iui.  We suffer from recurrent miscarriages since DD.  This is considered secondary infertility.  You can see my history below.  It is quite extensive.

I share your frustrations.  I know some people judge b/c we have a child and we should be grateful.  Yes, we are very grateful and probably more so because of what we have been through.  I wish I had some magic words of you.  I just know how difficult it can be when there are no darn answers.  I know that you want this second child just as you wanted a first.

The only thing I can offer is some advice on perhaps affording another IVF.

We never had IVF coverage before until now.  So:

IVF #1 RE offered 50% discount b/c of what we went through already (I.E. 3 failed IUI's, 2 m/c's and an ectopic in which my tube ruptured).

IVF#2 FET-again, RE offered it for free.

IVF#3 DE cycle.  Cost a bleepin forture but I had just gotten a settlement from an accident.  That is how we paid

IVF#4 I participated in New York State Department of Health grant.  The whole thing cost $6,000.  THis included ICSI, cryo, co-culture and meds.

IVF#5 I had insurance finally but it will only cover this one and maybe part of another or FET.

So, my advice would be to ask RE for discount or studies or grants.  Think about a shared risk program.

Happily Married for 7 years and Loving Mom to an amazing 4 year old little girl.

TTC #2

Mild PCOS, Mild endo, Secondary infertility/miscarriage. Tubal factor.  Last and final guess: male factor causing miscarriages.

First 3 IUI's-BFN's

4th IUI-BFP (early m/c)

5th IUI-BFN

6th IUI-BFP (early m/c)

7th  IUI-BFP (ectopic pregnancy and right tube removed at 8 weeks)

IVF #1 BFP (triplets- 2 were blighted ovums and the third lost at 7 weeks after heartbeat detected)

IVF #2-FET (early m/c)

IVF #3 DE cycle. M/C and D&C at 7 weeks. Nothing to freeze.  Found out it was a girl and had chromosomal error.  Nothing to do with me since not my eggs.

Possible natural conception.  Beta of 6 then dropped.

IVF #4-back to my own eggs. M/C and D&C, of course.  What else would happen? Genetically normal male.  4 frost babies left.

IVF #5 with ds.  Retrieval on 10/25 11 eggs. 8 fertilized.  Transfer on 10/30-put in 4 blasts!!  2 made it to freeze, making a total of 6 totsicles.  In 2ww.  First beta 11/9.
