Alyssa Johnson, 43, of Santa Cruz, Calif.: Ms. Johnson was training for the Boston Marathon when she began experiencing cramps in her leg. After a few years of wrong diagnosis, she finally was told she had Parkinson’s disease. Although running is more difficult now, in 2007 she ran the New York City Marathon and raised $40,000 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. “Occasionally when I’m running I’ll come to a long downhill and my legs work the way they used to work and my arm swings the way it used to swing and it’s like running before Parkinson’s, and that’s the best feeling,” she says.
