Hello y'all. New to this board. I usually hang out on the Get Beautiful Nails & What Should I Wear boards.

I'm a smoker and would like to quit. I've been smoking for a little under 2 years now, started when I was 32. I don't even know why I started, I just did. I hung out with my co-workers during their smoke breaks and just picked it up. Now, when I'm with them I'm smoking too instead of just hanging out like I did before. They seem to be glad that I started.

My family has a history of smokers but my mom and dad both quit cold turkey. Neither my brother nor sister smoke.

I'm a light smoker and usually smoke around 6 or 7 cigarettes per day. But I'm heavily addicted to the nicotine. It's also a habit for me too. I've been using cigarettes like a reward to myself after completing certain tasks. I have the usual hang-ups and catch points like smoking after getting up, after a meal, driving, talking on the phone and so on. It's more than just the nicotine... it's holding it, smelling the smoke, the taste and a general oral fixation that I have with cigarettes.

Even though I don't smoke that much in terms of quantity, I'm probably smoking more than I realize because I smoke the long style Capri 120's menthols. With the longer cigarette, I know I'm actually consuming more nicotine and I'm smoking for a longer period of time due to the length. Plus, the menthol tastes good so it makes them that much easier to smoke.

What has worked for y'all to quit? I've never tried patches, gum, drugs, hypnosis or anything else. I tried to quit cold turkey once and it lasted for 3 days. But when I started again, I smoked even more so I decided to just give in and accept my addiction.

I want to quit even though I enjoy cigarettes very much.

Anyone have any tips for me?

Thanks so much!

-Cindy

Wellbutrin worked for me - well the generic bupropion started at 100 mg a day and moved to 150 mg a day.  I think too you have to really be ready and want it.  I started walking LOTS and I exercise more.  I actually lost weight when I quit but I quit drinking alcohol 1 month before so they could have accounted for something.  Good Luck

Pick up Allen Carr's book, stop smoking the easy way. Why quit has some great resources as well (and some wake up calls). And, really, it doesn't matter if you smoke one a day or 100. YOu are still a smoker. Overall, for me, I quit smoking when I disliked smoking more then I liked it. And when I realized the things I "liked" about it, weren't really my "likes" but more my addiction talking. But, read the book.....I did, and I put down the smokes as soon as I put down the book. It isn't EASY....but it is easier.

There are so many way to quit, and we're all different. How are you doing now? Have you researched various methods, or spoken with a DR?
