Hi! I've never been to this board before. My name is Jena. I am 28 yrs old and I just found out that my Grandpa has been diagnosed with lung cancer. His doctor found two tumors on his right lung. He has been advised by his specialist that they would like to remove the lung on Thursday. I am in shock. How can a man who is 76 yrs. old and will not quit smoking live on one lung? What could possibly be his quality of life? He's been in so much pain and they've just been giving him pain medication to help him sleep. Because if he lies on his back there's too much pressure from the tumors. Why do they have to remove his entire lung? It seems so drastic. If I were him, I'd just take the pain pills and leave it up to God. Has anyone else ever heard of anything so drastic? Do you know what the success rates are and what the quality of life is after the surgery?

Hi, Jena........and welcome!

Actually, removing an entire lung isn't as far-fetched or as drastic as you might think.....it really depends on where the tumors are located and what the oncologist plans to do after the surgery (chemo, radiation, etc.). Yes, he CAN live with just one lung (John Wayne did it for years and years!)......and he CAN have a good quality of life with just that one lung! BUT.....he needs to quit smoking!!!!! And that's something he may not even WANT to do after the surgery, you know! Keep us posted on how he's doing, whether he's quit smoking (I hope!), and what his doctors plans are for him. Pain meds only go so far......sometimes surgery can reduce the amount of pain meds needed, or eliminate the need for them entirely! Let us know, okay?

Welcoming (((hugs))),
Linda.
