The Effect of Antimalarials Over Time for People with Lupus

There is some evidence that when people with lupus get older -- into their 60s and later -- lupus disease activity may lessen, with fewer flares and milder symptoms, or even disappear. This may be because the immune system usually slows down as people age, so autoimmune disease activity could also decrease.

Some studies have shown that individuals who develop lupus late in life have more moderate disease than people who develop lupus when they are young. Like other lupus patients whose lupus disease is less active, older patients may continue to take antimalarial medicine to treat or prevent flares.

Factors That Influence Pregnancy Outcomes...

Although women with lupus used to be advised to avoid getting pregnant, out of fear of complications for the mother, the baby, or both, a better understanding of the complications of lupus and improved management of lupus pregnancies have resulted in improved outcomes.

Today at least 85 percent of lupus pregnancies result in live births.

However, doctors still advise women who have active lupus kidney disease (lupus nephritis, or LN) not to get pregnant until their disease has been inactive for at least six months.

"Could I Have Lupus?" Ads -- Coming Soon to Fast Food Restaurants Near You

The Lupus Foundation of America recently received exciting news from the Ad Council and the Office on Women's Health.

The Ad Council's "Could I have lupus?" campaign will soon debut on TV screens in more than 1,000 fast food restaurants across the United States. Restaurants participating in this include: Denny's, Wendy's, Arby's, Taco Bell, McDonald's, Carl's Jr. and KFC.

You may recall that this multi-year campaign "Could I have lupus?" was created to raise awareness of lupus, increase recognition of lupus symptoms, and encourage those experiencing symptoms to talk to their doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment of lupus can help prevent or reduce potentially disabling or life-threatening damage to vital organs.

Learn more about the Ad Council campaign, and watch a mini documentary on the women featured in this campaign.
