Change in Areola/Nipple Color

Has anyone out there ever had one of their areola/nipples change in color.  I recently started on bio-identical drugs; Evamist and Prochieve.  I noticed not long ago that the nipple/areola color on my left breast started getting darker.  There is no pain.  Someone said that when going through menopause and taking hormones things like this can happen.  I recently went to my gyne and she checked my breasts and said everything seemed OK, but I don't remember if the color was already changing at that time.  I just had my yearly mammogram done, but I'm still waiting for results.

Any ideas?

Hi.  I have not had that happen.  I also don't remember hearing it before either.  I looked it up and found this...

If you observe dimples, puckers, or a rash on the skin of the nipple or the areola (darker skin that surrounds the nipple) and these symptoms persist, or do not respond well to treatment creams, check with your doctor to determine what action to take. One unusual type of breast cancer is called Paget's disease, and starts out in the form of a rash. When caught and dealt with at an early stage, this is a very curable condition.

I would suggest calling and talking to the dr's nurse.  If she has any questions she can ask the dr and get back to you.  It should not cost....  (It's better to know for sure so you don't have to think or worry about it.)

Good luck and let us know what you find out!

Talked to the Drs. PA & she said it may be from the Evamist & to start using it on the other arm.  Maybe the right areola will get darker too.  She said just keep an eye on things.  If there are any more changes, I'll pay the Dr. a visit.  Thanks.

Glad you checked in at your drs.  Could you let us know what happens when you change arms?  If it does indeed change that one, this info might be helpful for someone else down the road.

Let us know how you are doing!

Just to help you breathe a bit easier:

The darkening of the areola can happen because of a spike in progesterone.  This often happens during pregnancy too!  Since your Prochieve is a progesterone gel I would be willing to bet that it may well be causing the areola color change!

Do stay on top of it with your doctor or his nurse though just to be safe!  And please let us know what decision you come to about it!!
