I am 51 and went off BC last November thinking that I'll hit menopause.  Since then, I've had my period off and on, mostly on and are always heavy and clotty.  This time, I've had a period for almost a month.  The dr. prescribed provera for 5 days to see what would happen.  The period continued.  I just had a biopsy and am now waiting for the results.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?  Needless to say, I'm very worried.  I've had no other symptoms and basically feel great except for the bleeding, which has now stopped.

Did your doctor make any mention to you about fibroids? Have you had a sonogram? Fibroids can cause very heavy clotty bleeding.

Hello, Lisa, and welcome to our board.  I am glad you are seeing your doctor as all 'unusual' bleeding should be checked out.  But having said that, I will hope for you that what you are experiencing is merely peri-menopause related.  During this time of our lives our periods can be shorter, longer, heavier, with or without clotting, lighter, closer together or further apart and sometime missing altogether for several months at a time!   If you have not already done so, please visit our Menopause Oasis to read up on this "time of life".  We try to make sure it is as up-to-date as possible.  What you are experiencing right now sure does sound like 'normal' to me!

Meanwhile, just know that you are welcome here anytime ~ to vent (it really does help), to ask questions, to share experiences or to just hang out with other gals who understand and care...

I've had yearly pap tests since I was 20, all negative including the last in April of 2009.  My new gyn. (I usually go to my primary care physician but thought since I'm in menopause, I would see a gyn who I'm not totally comfortable with) felt what he believed was fibroids last September during an exam.  I had an ultrasound last October to determine the size.  They were very small and he felt that if I went off BC, they would disappear or shrink which I believe they had.  Everything else looked normal on the ultrasound last October 2008.  He ordered another ultrasound along with the biopsy but my ultrasound was to be this Friday.  The biopsy was yesterday, therefore, he claimed he wasn't going to have me continue with the ultrasound.

Thanks for your help!

Boy does this sound familar!!!!! I was in my 50's when I hit perimenopause.  To start off with I skipped a period and thought I was "there"--but boy was I wrong! 4 months later (while visiting my aunt out of town!) I had a terribly HEAVY period (and, of course, I had nothing with me since I thought I was through with all of that!).  This continued for a few months (I had been back to my gyn to get it checked out and all was well--just peri!) but it was the period that lasted over a month that sent me back--actually at that point it was thankfully just spotting.  I went on Provera for the first 10 days of the month and stayed on it a year--until I went on hrt. It took a couple of months to get things regulated.  If I'm remembering correctly (that that is debatable at times!  LOL) I think I spotted on through most of the first 10 days I took the first one and I had a little spotting before I started the next month's round but after that it worked like a charm.  Unfortunately, most hormone treatments don't work IMMEDIATELY.  The fact that you do have some small fibroids probably complicates it all too.  From the few women who have had fibroid problems who have posted on the board I gathered that Provera can be helpful if you do have fibroids--but I think you have to take it monthly like I did.

I can't remember if Cheryl or KT mentioned that often low dose birth control pills are used to even out the hormonal fluctions of peri.  I think you mentioned going off one of the bcps before this episode. I'd say it's probably an indication that you aren't quite "there" (as in post menopause).  You can wait and see if things settle down to a more "normal" schedule or you can talk to your doctor about the possibility of either going back on bcps or regularly taking the Provera or one of the prescription natural progesterones that are available now.  If you aren't having other symptoms, that might be the way to go (do check out the symptom list in the Oasis KT mentioned--you might be surprised at some) the progesterone idea might work well for you. Just discuss the options with your doctor. In any case you need to let your doctor know that the bleeding has not stopped after the 5 days of Provera.

Do let us know what happens! We do care about the ladies who post here!
