Boy does this sound familar!!!!! I was in my 50's when I hit perimenopause. To start off with I skipped a period and thought I was "there"--but boy was I wrong! 4 months later (while visiting my aunt out of town!) I had a terribly HEAVY period (and, of course, I had nothing with me since I thought I was through with all of that!). This continued for a few months (I had been back to my gyn to get it checked out and all was well--just peri!) but it was the period that lasted over a month that sent me back--actually at that point it was thankfully just spotting. I went on Provera for the first 10 days of the month and stayed on it a year--until I went on hrt. It took a couple of months to get things regulated. If I'm remembering correctly (that that is debatable at times! LOL) I think I spotted on through most of the first 10 days I took the first one and I had a little spotting before I started the next month's round but after that it worked like a charm. Unfortunately, most hormone treatments don't work IMMEDIATELY. The fact that you do have some small fibroids probably complicates it all too. From the few women who have had fibroid problems who have posted on the board I gathered that Provera can be helpful if you do have fibroids--but I think you have to take it monthly like I did.
I can't remember if Cheryl or KT mentioned that often low dose birth control pills are used to even out the hormonal fluctions of peri. I think you mentioned going off one of the bcps before this episode. I'd say it's probably an indication that you aren't quite "there" (as in post menopause). You can wait and see if things settle down to a more "normal" schedule or you can talk to your doctor about the possibility of either going back on bcps or regularly taking the Provera or one of the prescription natural progesterones that are available now. If you aren't having other symptoms, that might be the way to go (do check out the symptom list in the Oasis KT mentioned--you might be surprised at some) the progesterone idea might work well for you. Just discuss the options with your doctor. In any case you need to let your doctor know that the bleeding has not stopped after the 5 days of Provera.
Do let us know what happens! We do care about the ladies who post here!
