Plan for Living
DAY THREE: Keep Lightening Your Heart
"People commonly feel that because I am considered a living Buddha I must experience only serenity, perpetual happiness, and have no worries. Unfortunately this is not so. As a high lama and incarnation of enlightenment I know better." --Kanju Khutush Tulka Rinpoche
True happiness isn't something that happens and then we're done. It's something we have to keep working at every day. Bummer, huh? I wish we could put in our time and then kick back for the rest of our lives too. Life just doesn't work that way, and the more we accept this fact, the more apt we'll be to keep the fires of contentment stoked.
Today, renew your commitment to creating your own true happiness. Make it a point to see the positive aspects of people and situations, and take time to name the things you're grateful for. A journal is a great way to start. To get your family in on the practice, share the things you learned or enjoyed that day when you sit down for dinner. It's important to always keep perspective and to remember that in every bad day, something good has happened.
Make a list of things you can do for yourself that help keep your mind quiet and your spirit revitalized (such as walking, sitting on the porch and listening to the birds, visiting a certain park or museum that makes you feel revived, or even just stepping outside the office at lunchtime) and do one thing every day. Figure out what you can do to make this possible, even if it's waking up 15 minutes earlier or turning off the TV for 30 minutes. Pen these activities into your schedule book and share your time-saving tactics on our Mind-Body message board.
