Do any of you know if it's typical to close a mastectomy incision with staples? I've had 2 mastectomies, both closed with special tape. This was 10 years ago. My sister was just diagnosed with Breast Cancer and underwent a mastectomy yesterday and they closed the incision with staples..ouch! Is this typical??

I really don't have that answer.......Hopefully someone will visit that does or you could go to the

Breast Cancer Board and someone there might have the answer:

How are you feeling?   How long since your surgery.

Thank you! I'm feeling really well. I was diagnosed back in December of 96, had a mastectomy, reconstruction and chemo. Then they found cancer in my remaining breast and I had a second mastectomy in Sep. 97. I was cancer free for almost 9 years and then I had a recurrance in Feb of 06 in my spine and femur. 5 weeks of radiation, and surgery to remove my ovaries ( this cancer is hormone sensitive) and I'm in remission. My sister has just taken the first step down a very long road. I'm worried about her, but she's tough and I know she'll do well. I'll try the other board. Thanks again for the info!

Hi Lucie

I hope the other board had great information for you.

You are such a strong woman.   I don't know if I could have faced all you have been through.   I have had friends that faced so very much and were strong for many years.   I guess when you face what you have been through and your sister is facing, every day is so important to live to the fullest.

Hugs

I don't have the answer to the mastectomy question either. They did use staples on me for my hodgkins lymphoma and for my ovca hysterectomy though. And they were both fine and were not painful.

You are so strong, I admire your strength. I always think I couldn't go through that, and then I remember I already did! With my Hodgkins in 1992, OVCA in 2004 and a recurrance in 2006, I feel like I have had Cancer 3 times! And beat it 3 times! (although I am still on Chemo)

And it is so hard to watch someone you love go through this. My sister has a rare form of bladder cancer and is having a hard time of it. She has been so positive and strong this past year, she is unbelievable, it kills me to see her in such pain, but I get comfort in the fact that she gets comfort from me when I can answer her questions and calm her fears because I have been there and really understand how she feels.

She has gone as far as planning much of her funeral and putting it in writing and delivered it to someone at her parish so that the family will not have to decide what she would have wanted if and/or when that time does come. I don't know where she finds her strength.
