My gynecologist just told me she wants me to get 60 minutes of exercise 5 days per week - YUCK!!!! My rheumy wants me to get water exercise rather than land, but I don't belong to a pool (or a gym) and have always used walking as my exercise. 2 miles per day in 30 minutes has been my mainstay for a couple of years now - my gyn. says that is fine for cardiac health, but she wants me to lose more weight, and she says that is not enough to help with weight loss, but if I double it she says I will start losing again quickly. I HATE to sweat and am considering trying to walk in the mornings and again in the evenings, but when the weather is miserable I know I won't want to do that. So - any ideas? Suggestions? Sympathy (heehee)?

Hugs,

Debbie

Hey Debbie, can you do any weight training, even with light weights? My docs are all saying that the advantage of building muscle mass -- not to the point of those scary bodybuilders, just increasing strength -- is that it increases metabolism so we burn more calories all the time. Remember, I got a lot of good out of those leg exercises just with five pounds, and arm exercises with only a pound or so. I know you have to be careful and should get clearance from your rheumy.

Hugs,

Pwid

Thanks, Pwid - great idea! I will start using the 3-lb. weights that I originally used. I had no problems with them. It wasn't until I moved up to 7- or 8-lb. weights that I got into trouble. And that will probably help with upper-body fibromyalgia pain, too.
You'd think I could have thought of that by myself, but it never even occurred to me. Thanks!!

Hugs,

Debbie

Today is Father's Day, and I just spent 45 minutes pacing around the kitchen while on the phone with my Dad! It is an easy indoor activity, it just takes a lot of reminding, and can take months before it becomes habit. I am not naturally a pacer.

Also, I love reading magazines like Science News which has interesting but short articles in it. I take them with me to all my, and my kids' doctor appointments. There, I read the magazine while I pace either in the hallway or in their waiting area, depending on the area available. You just have to get over being self-conscious.

To make the workout more "productive" while on the phone at work, I can take my foot stool and use it to go and down on... but that is not good for someone with bad knees... and can sound a bit weird if I get out of breath, so I only do that when I am on the phone with people I know well, and are also trying to get in their exercise.

Great ideas, Naomi! I'm also trying to pace while on the phone but am still too self-conscious to do it in the dr.'s office. However, w/ my doctors, I usually get shown back to the little examining room right away but then wait there for what seems like hours - there's not much room to pace, but I might try it anyway!
