H everyone, I am having big trouble finding a med that helps the O.A. My druggist suggested lodine or voltaren, wanted to know if you have taken either one or have any info on them. I have run the gamet of meds & so far nothing is helping, I am going to get glucosamine & see if that helps, also want to know how you fight the depression & tiredness, I'm tired all the time & there are days when I can hardly drag myself aroundAny help will be greatly appreciated, thank's bunches, Janet from Ohio

Hi, Janet - it's good to hear from you! I tried to post to you a day or two ago but kept getting error messages. Yesterday I couldn't post at all on this board, although I was able to post without difficulty on the Arthritis Board. I have emailed iVillage 3 times about the technical problems and am hoping they are solved now.

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about voltaren, although I have at least heard of lodine and know that it's a systemic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID). You might try the MedlinePlus website and see if they have information about it - their drug lookup information is excellent. Here's the URL:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/
Then just click on "drug information" and go from there.

As far as depression, there are medications that can help with that - talk openly with your doctor about the way you feel, and if he/she doesn't listen, try to find one who will! My husband has been on anti-depressants for 3 years, and they really help him.

I hope this helps, at least a little, and that the post works! Oh, I also wanted to let you know that I got your email, but when I tried to respond to that I got a message saying there was a server problem. I am just out of luck lately with computers!!

Gentle hugs,

Debbie

Hi Debbie, thank's for answering. I did find out about Lodine & don't think I want to try it, my Dr. gave me some samples of meloxicam & so I think I will try that. I have tried almost everything but, nothing work's.I also have fibromylgia & along with the O.A. it's hell. I am taking a anti depressent but, I think I have been on them to long to do any good. I do have an awful lot on my plate at this time, I have been widowed for 11yrs & this Oct 25th. I will be getting married to a widower I have been seeing for some time. I have to get my house ready for sale & his ready for me & my little maltese pup to move into, along with planning the wedding so, not sure any pill would help at this point. I just wonder why your not getting the response about O.A. I would think you would be getting, not that many are posting. Thank's again, Janet

Hi, Janet --
I was on voltarin (generic version, which is called diclofenac) for about three years, and it gave me the best relief of any of the NSAIDs that I tried. Much better than Vioxx, for me. You might want to ask your doc about it, for two reasons: 1) I remember that when I was looking it up, the info was that it is often prescribed for fibromyalgia; I don't seem to have fibro, but I did notice that the diclofenac/voltarin helped with general muscle pain as well as my specific hip pain. It kept me going before my hip surgeries, I'll tell you that. And it is the pain-fighting ingredient in Arthrotec, which also has a tummy-tamer for people whose stomachs are upset by NSAIDs. I never had any trouble with the diclofenac/voltarin alone, but I made a special effort to be sure to take it with food -- preferably dairy -- to protect my stomach.

Hey, I remember when you were wondering about whether you should get engaged or not, and I am happy that you decided on what will make you happy! Good luck, congrats, and all that.

Hugs,

Pwid

Hi, Pwid and Janet!

Pwid, thanks for your response - it's great to have that information about the diclofenac, which I have never taken.

Janet, I also have fibromyalgia in addition to OA, and I know what you mean! What has helped me more than anything else w/ the fibromyalgia has been a low-dosage tricyclic, amitriptyline (sp?). It is used at higher doses as an anti-depressant, or at least it used to be until the newer serotonin uptake inhibitors came on the market. Between taking the amitriptyline, which helps me sleep, and exercise, I pretty much have had the fibro under control for the last 2-3 years. It does flare back up occasionally, but the flares are much fewer and don't last as long. The neck and shoulder exercises my physical therapist taught me really help the upper body pain, and walking plus stretches (also from the PT) help the lower body. I can't stop the progression of the arthritis, but at least I feel better, and I hope the same can happen for you, especially since you have so much on your plate right now, planning the wedding and selling your house!

As far as your anti-depressant, they can stop working after awhile, but a new medication might not. Please talk w/ your dr. and tell him/her how you feel. Both my nieces have had to change their antidepressants, by the way (these nieces aren't even related to each other - one is on my side of the family and the other on my husband's side). Once they got onto the correct dosage of the new meds, both were fine again. One was on Prozac and went on something else; the other was on Luvoz and went on Prozac!

The technical problems w/ the boards seem to be resolved (yea!) so I hope things will go more smoothly now. I'm sorry I couldn't answer your email. This weekend my husband took apart our old computer, which kept freezing up and totally frustrating us, and put together our new one, so maybe things will go better on my end, as well.

Gentle hugs,

Debbie
