I can't agree more. Always stay within arms reach of your child. If they are young or can't swim put a Coast Guard approved life vest on your child. Floaties and other flotation devices are not a replacement.

Water is one of my biggest fears for my children.  Whenever we visit my MIL, I'm always making sure that I know where my youngest (4 yrs) is because MIL has an inground pool.

It is so easy to lose track of a little one, especially at a large family gathering.  We had a case here where the parents of 3 children, the yougest 2 years old,  were at a large family get together where there was a pool.  Tragically, the 2 year old drowned, either because they lost track of him for awhile or they thought someone was watching him in the pool, I can't remember which.  The parents were arrested, thrown in jail and their other 2 children taken away from them.  The state attorney general said he "wanted to make an example of them."

While I agree the parents were negligent, it was an accident, and the state very much exceeded it's authority.  And for that attorney general to "make an example" of 2 grieving parents was pretty heartless.
