..to 'notice', so to speak, that you've stopped taking Prozac (Fluoxetine)?

I've been on 20mg a day for about 1.5 years. I've never had any history of depression in my life; for some super-unclear reason I got very depressed around Jan- Feb 08. I don't know or understand why: I was and still am very happy in my long term r-ship, job tolerable, no major problems etc etc etc. But it was to the point where I  couldn't really function day to day. To this day I wonder why - and am almost thinking I should have just 'pulled myself up' at the time rather than resorting to meds. Didn't feel like that at the time though!

Anyway, I've sorta kinda decided -  this is silly. I've never had depression in my life before; I  have absolutely  nothing whatsoever to be depressed about,  I AM very happy all around. I need to stop. I hear it's around 2 - 3 weeks for the effects to wear off? I feel great. I smoke 0.1% of what I used to. But I'm never 'in the mood' and always hungry. No such thing as free lunch eh? I just want to return to 'natural', I suppose.

Anyone has had any experience with this sort of thing?

Sometimes it's hard to just "pull ourselves up" without help, and it's good that help is available.

Since you're thinking about, or have already done so, going off of Prozac, it's a good idea to discuss how best to taper off of it with as few side effects as possible.  It's also a good idea to monitor your symptoms/side effects in the event that you find your depression returning.

Good luck!

Something really important to remember, and your psychologist, psychiatrist or therapist should have told this to you right off the bat, that depression isn't necessarily CAUSED by anything. It doesn't have to be a life factor.

You have to think about it scientifically. Your body, for one reason or another, developed a seratonin or dopamine defciency. It is no reflection on your life, lifestyle, or of your level of personal happiness. It's just a hormone fluctuation. Your body was not producing the hormones to the level necessary to keep you going within a normal range. Prozac is now providing that missing hormone to restore the chemical imbalance in your brain.

It's like asthma, or cancer even. Something in your body is jacked up, through no fault of your own, and you need medication to help fix it. Depression is not something you can just "snap out of." It's not having the "blues." It is a mental illness, and you can't fix an illness by snapping your fingers.

I would be wary of going off Prozac since it is working so well for you. Make sure that before you begin to taper off ( and remmeber to do so VERY slowly, Prozac has alot of withdrawal issues) make sure you have this approved by whoever is dispensing/supervising your medication. Make sure that they are on board with you. My NP, who supervises my meds told me she needs me to be in a normal, happy, healthy state for one year before we can work on tapering off .

Hi! I was reading your post & wondered what you decided to do? Have you been off the prozac for a time? I have been off antidepressants for many years. The last one(effexor) had some concerning withdrawal symptoms, even though I was supervised by the dr. Please don't do it alone! It took me about 6 weeks to clear the med from my system & feel *normal* or whatever you want to call it. LOL I had trouble achieving orgasm & that was no longer a problem after 6 weeks. HTH Please update when you can. GL! jan
